The just-right philosophy book

A professor of mine in college assigned this book for a class, and it quickly became my favorite book of all time and remains so a decade later. I have what I would consider a sizable passion for philosophy, but I found taking a survey of the great philosophers rather difficult. Reading the primary, original texts are often opaque and dense at best (and there is no way one can read everything, even by a single philosopher), but many books that claim to be "introductions" to the greats are often very terse and rarely get too deep into the material.

This book is just-right. It introduces you to the the major philosophers neither by overly simplifying them or batting you over the head with their details.

Finally, as the title of the book suggests, Melchert wonderfully connects these philosophers together showing how they influenced each other and how different philosophers attempt to answer the same fundamental questions.

Excellent overview - highly recommended for majors and for anyone who wants to know more about the history of philosophy

This book provides a highly readable and accessible introduction to some of the major participants and their important contributions to the historical and ongoing conversation that is philosophy. Philosophy, as it developed in the Western tradition, is not a set of doctrines or ideas; it is, rather, a kind of ongoing conversation that began with the ancient Greeks and continues into the present. It turns out there are certain basic questions, that keep coming up, but that always call for a reasoned response that is both attentive to the specific context in which they arise and aware of the ways in which the question has been addressed before, in other contexts. Contemporary discussions on philosophical topics cannot fully be understood in isolation from this "great conversation."

Reading this would be a good way for the undergraduate philosophy student to "fill in the gaps" in their grasp of the context for the topics they are interested in; while it is no substitute for going through the primary texts, it does include several excerpts from primary texts and manages to represent the dominant concerns of most thinkers included in a way that is clear and accessible without oversimplification. The primary value of this text would be to provide an outline of the main thinkers and issues and methods, that would serve as a basis for more thorough exploration. The book does include helpful guidance for the reader who wants to explore a particular thinker or topic further. One might quibble about what is left out in this overview -- I wish there were a chapter on Rousseau, for example -- but what is astonishing is how much he manages to cover in a single volume. He covers nearly all of the major "canonical" movements and thinkers from the time of the ancient Greeks to contemporary analytic and continental philosophy. It is quite an accomplishment and a rewarding read. Highly recommended.

In class we are using the 5th addition, but my professor said it was fine to use the fourth edition because it was cheaper. Well I bought this one thinking it was the 5th addition, turned out its the 3rd edition and its only A PAGE off from the 5th edition. Love it :)

About the Author

Jason Sanders is a senior software engineer in the CUDA Platform group at NVIDIA. While at NVIDIA, he helped develop early releases of CUDA system software and contributed to the OpenCL 1.0 Specification, an industry standard for heterogeneous computing. Jason received his master’s degree in computer science from the University of California Berkeley where he published research in GPU computing, and he holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University. Prior to joining NVIDIA, he previously held positions at ATI Technologies, Apple, and Novell. When he’s not writing books, Jason is typically working out, playing soccer, or shooting photos.

Edward Kandrot is a senior software engineer on the CUDA Algorithms team at NVIDIA. He has more than twenty years of industry experience focused on optimizing code and improving performance, including for Photoshop and Mozilla. Kandrot has worked for Adobe, Microsoft, and Google, and he has been a consultant at many companies, including Apple and Autodesk. A good introduction to CUDA C which could well supplant its competition

"CUDA by example: an introduction to general-purpose GPU programming" is a brand new text by Jason Sanders and Edward Kandrot, senior members of NVIDIA's CUDA development team. This is basically the second introductory text to hit the market on general-purpose GPU programming, the first one being "Programming Massively Parallel Processors: A Hands-On Approach" by David Kirk and Wen-Mei Hwu.

The Good: it is not very common to find a technical book in this price range that is not simply in greyscale. Perhaps unsurprisingly for an NVIDIA book there's quite a bit of green, and this definitely enhances the reading experience. On a more substantive note: the authors really mean the "by example" part of "CUDA by example". From chapter 3 onward, all the main concepts are fleshed out by showing and dissecting lots of code -- probably more so than in Kirk & Hwu's text, which includes application case studies, but also more extensive treatments of the CUDA architecture. As with any example-based book, it is important to run and modify the programs while reading through the text. Right now there are a few hiccups with the files Sanders & Kandrot were kind enough to provide (e.g. as of this writing README.txt and license.txt do not have the appropriate permissions set), but I'm pretty sure these are just teething troubles which will disappear soon enough. The writing is cheerful (e.g. "For those readers who are more familiar with Star Trek than with weaving, a warp in this context has nothing to do with the speed of travel through space.", p. 106) and the explanations are for the most part clear, the language being pretty lucid -- once again, probably more so than in the Kirk & Hwu volume. This fact, along with the availability of lecture slides and lab materials for the latter book, points to the main difference between the two texts: Sanders & Kandrot are better-suited to a self-study of CUDA C, while the Kirk & Hwu book is more of a class textbook (and thus broader). Finally, I was pleased to see Sanders & Kandrot include a whole chapter (chapter 11) on working with multiple GPUs, a topic Kirk & Hwu relegate to a short section.

The Bad: having color is a welcome addition, but I could not understand why the authors chose to simply follow the text editor's default highlighting of keywords when they could have used color to highlight specific portions of the code. Similarly, a number of figures (e.g. Figs. 5.5 and 8.1) are described in the text as containing green, but they show up in greyscale. The book also contains quite a few minor typos, but that's normal; what's not normal is that every single section cross-reference outside the appendix is wrong (I counted 16 in total). Moving on to more consequential matters: Kirk & Hwu have a chapter on floating point topics; given that numerical computations are certainly part of general-purpose GPU programming, Sanders & Kandrot could have said more about them. On a different note, Kirk & Hwu have a chapter on the competing programming model OpenCL, while Sanders & Kandrot do not even have an index entry on it -- one might counter-argue here that they have knowingly put CUDA in the title. This brings me to my main gripe with this book: why didn't the authors just call it "CUDA C by example"? I believe the answer is connected to their ambivalence toward C++. An illustrative example: new and delete are used in host code only once in the entire volume (on p. 82 and p. 84, respectively), but when the code snippets are shown again (on pp. 86-87) new and delete have been silently replaced by malloc and free! In the case of device code, the authors do not discuss CUDA-supported C++ constructs like default parameters, namespaces, function templates, not to mention compute capability 2.0 things like function objects. (Structures with member functions do not beget C++). In a nutshell, the book contains too much C++ for people who only know C, and not enough C++ for those who actually use that language.

Despite these misgivings, I cannot ignore this book's low selling price (especially on the Kindle), its practical focus on a multitude of code listings, and the fact that its explanations are generally clear. Thus, I think it is an appropriate buy for those interested in learning about CUDA C.

The best introduction to CUDA by far.

This is an excellent introduction to CUDA. The prose and content are excellent: I read it cover-to-cover in a single sitting and enjoyed every page.

The authors clearly explain the basic CUDA paradigm starting with very simple code and working up to progressively more complex examples. The authors spend a considerable amount of time discussing different memory types and memory access styles, motivating when each style is appropriate. The code snippets are clean, clear and concise, providing a minimal yet complete introduction to each new language feature.

Highly recommended!

The book does not provide an HTML pointer to the source code used in the book. Edward Kandrot writes: "The Kindle version shipped a week too soon, it was supposed to ship next week when the physical book ships. Because of this, the website at NVIDIA wasn't done yet. Jason just spent the day making the website happen!

[...] is where the source code is currently located. I hope this helps. I wrote the examples to be specific for what is being covered, putting extras in the header files so as not to distract from the topic at hand. Only really works if the reader has the header files as well..."

Great starting point for learning CUDA.

I downloaded CUDA by Example on the Kindle and starting reading it. Sanders and Kandrot provide a nice step by step walk through of how to program with CUDA and the examples are really straight forward. It begins with the basic hello world introduction to the programming model, then dives deeper into the different API features with examples in each chapter.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get started using CUDA.

For my first book unleashed onto the unsuspecting world, I had to write the in-depth version of one of the best tales I've ever come across. I was inspired by my older sister's POV video series better known to her fans as the "Overdeveloped Stepson" series. I hope you enjoy venturing into the mind of this unaware, loving stepmother, her antics, aloofness, and uncanny ability to drive her stepson absolutely to the brink, as much as I loved "being" her in order to write her very own story.

Wow! Realistic Erotic Fiction with a subtle sense of humor

This is the second book I've read by this author, and again she has completely nailed the subtleties of realistic erotic fiction.
There is an element of tongue in cheek humor that I've never seen so well written in erotica before.

I guarantee this book will turn you on, and probably make you smile too - how rare is that?

Definitely worth the price, I hope she writes more in this style - very original!

Overdeveloped stepsons and entertainment centers

A stepmother must deal with a young man's rather convenient medical "problem". Gotta tread carefully with the description here, but let's just say the kid has physical dimensions approximating a horse, and perhaps gobbles a bottle of vitamin E per day with a dozen oysters, washing that down with Spanish Fly. Ms. Tirrell doesn't waste time with extraneous details ... though perhaps the real problem is that her (not really) ingenuous stepmother cleans the house in short skirts and high heels and admits in the narration that her bosom is "not designed for housework". The young man's natural "reaction" frightens the lady; she takes him to the doctor. Diagnosis: he's "overdeveloped". Somehow, a solution is found. Meanwhile, I enjoyed the complaint about the absent husband's "god-awful, giant entertainment center taking up half the room". I share Ms. Tirrell's contempt for overpriced and unnecessary electronics encased in pasteboard furniture.

Nice story about a mother's love for her over developed son who needs (under doctor's orders) to be relieved. This theme is not new, so I give it four stars. Tina's writing is excellent however and I look forward to more of her work.

A "Must Have" refrigeration book. Buy two !

If you've done some HVAC work but find yourself stumped the first time you work on a freezer or frig, then you need this book!. This is a world of oil losses, hard to know line pressures, strange refrigerant valves and controls and head masters, etc. And this book will explain them all to you with lots of plain talk, plain examples, great drawings, and even a cd-rom of animation. And best of all, it has a page of "Rules of Thumb", such as; High Efficieny (seer) condenser splits = 20 degrees and below. And since refrigerant recovery of freezers and frig's are far more common place than HVAC work, it covers several methods of evacuation and recovery. This book has lots of troubleshooting notes and lots of pictures and all the basics of refrigeration from motors, capillarys, TEV'S and defrosters through superheat and critical charging and so much more. I own many hvac books and this one absolutely stands out as a 'must have' book ! Another good book to have when you want to "master" the trade, is Technician's Guide to Refrigeration Systems'by Corinchock. And of course, Troubleshooting and Servicing Modern Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems by Tomczyk. Warning that Tomczyk's book is sold as several books, each with a few chapters, so only buy the complete book I mentioned above, else you will have duplicate text.

the book is well put together and provides well thought out information, as well as being in depth enough to help anyone serious about the HVAC/R trade. I hate spending money for bad books and am happy to recommend this book for purchase. Buy it.

I have yet to finish it but its still worth the read so far

This is my personal testimony: I attended undergrad and was kicked out of school for bad grades, got back in and finished. Started working for a major telecom company and now being there for almost 5yrs, with no change in title after the work I have contributed, I have made the decision to quit working for corporate america and started my own businesses (digital/print media and day trading). I am enrolled in grad school full time working on two Masters degrees and possibly for a PhD in Comp Sci. Neither of my parents attended college. I am a first generation college student, and my older sister went back and has now became a teacher in medicine, my grandfather, my mother and father (before he passed), aunts, uncles and plenty of other relatives are entrepreneurs in their own respective fields. So quite naturally the bug bit me too. I can't stand working for a major corporation, no control, you are in a rat race, its always about the bottom line, no freedom and the list could go on.

I said all of that to say this, I have never thought that being a successful person is wrong nor spiritually damaging but, like the bible says, the love of money is the root of all evil. I also believe that you trying to succeed can follow the same danger because you put more emphasis on being filthy rich, rather than your personal peace and freedom and that's what I don't get when I get up everyday to go to a job that only is worried about the bottom line but tries to care about their employees but because of customer demands and shareholders its tough and you have to "tighten the bootstraps" so to speak. Since i made the decision to become self employed 2 years ago and as I am making my transition out of corporate america, I have used this book as a guiding light for being business minded and also keep your spiritual gifts and fruits intact. I love the fact they use stories of actual people that have hit that wall in fortune and fame when it comes to their success vs their salvation. I also love the fact that its a motivational book and not so much of a spiritual guideline and not too "Holy Ghost, this scripture, that scripture". Its just open and candid stories of people who are no different than anyone else that has struggled with salvation and they tell their story of how they overcome, kind of a personal feel to it. I have other books for the spiritual aspect of my life, this book handles your human aspect. The questions we all have, the everyday struggles we all face and this book is a great tool to let you know that you are running the same race as everyone else and here is how they have faced it. This book was so good, I actually bought one for a friend of mine.

A must read for any Christian business person

Superb and honest. The leaders in this book allow us to see that it was not a cakewalk to achieve what they did. It showed that they understood that anything of true value is seldom reached without a committed effort. Putting our faith in God is what fuels that effort to achieve and pushes through the times when making the easier decision is not the right one.
I refer to this book often when facing challenges in my own business and it has always allowed me to refocus on God and renews my willingness to continue. God bless.
