Reno reveals how North Americans have been shaped by their preferred means of disposal: sanitary landfill. Based on the author’s fieldwork as a common laborer at a large, transnational landfill on the outskirts of Detroit, the book argues that waste management helps our possessions and dwellings to last by removing the transient materials they shed and sending them elsewhere.  Ethnography conducted with waste workers shows how they conceal and contain other people’s wastes, all while negotiating the filth of their occupation, holding on to middle-class aspirations, and occasionally scavenging worthwhile stuff from the trash. Waste Away also traces the circumstances that led one community to host two landfills and made Michigan a leading importer of foreign waste. Focusing on local activists opposed to the transnational waste trade with Canada, the book’s ethnography analyzes their attempts to politicize the removal of waste out of sight that many take for granted. Documenting these different ways of relating to the management of North American rubbish, Waste Away demonstrates how the landfills we create remake us in turn, often behind our backs and beneath our notice.

I will preface this comment by admitting that I have only read the first chapter of the book. I was intrigued by the questions the author raised about how we view, or rather, don't view, the things we discard in our daily lives. I have never given much thought to what happens to my trash once it's put to the curb, and never really considered how taboo it is to talk about it (as I am now discovering in writing this). I am looking forward to reading the rest of the book.

It reads like a textbook

What could otherwise have been a very informative book, was ruined by the authors style of writing. It reads like a textbook. Example: "When people scavenge from mass-waste streams, they also circumvent the tacit norms of mass consumption, which keep the ideologically purified domains of home and market in dynamic tension." The whole book is written in professor-speak. I am slogging my way through it because it spite of the writing style, it is an interesting topic. I just don't want to have to work so hard to finish a book.

Best Math Curriculum out there!

This curriculum has been such a major blessing for us and our son. He was struggling with ACE, which required a lot of help from my wife and I. We finally decided to try something different and went with Saxon. We bought this, along with the matching DIVE CD. Now, he has gotten caught up and is several weeks ahead in a little over 2 months! The lessons have problems that overlap with previous concepts, so that the student sees all the concepts multiple times to truly help them learn the material. My son actually enjoys math now, which is the biggest endorsement of all!

We are homeschoolers and have been using Saxon Math for four years. If you get this book, you will NOT need Algebra 1/2, as this book ends with all of the skill sets needed to go into Algebra 1. We never used the solutions manual, but everything else is necessary to teach and learn.

A CLASSIC OF "NATURAL THEOLOGY"

Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer who originated the concept of a programmable computer.

The Earl of Bridgewater (1856-1829; he was an amateur naturalist) on his deathbed commissioned eight "Bridgewater Treatises" to explore "the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as manifested in the Creation." These eight volumes appeared between 1833 to 1840, and included such works as: On the Adaptation of External Nature to the Physical Condition of Man (1833), by John Kidd; Astronomy and General Physics: Considered with Reference to Natural Theology by William Whewell; Animal and Vegetable Physiology: Considered with Reference to Natural Theology, Volume 1 by Peter Mark Roget; Geology and Mineralogy Considered with Reference to Natural Theology, Volume 1; and Chemistry, Meteorology, and the Function of Digestion Considered with Reference to Natural Theology by William Prout.

Babbage felt that books such as Whewell's "give support to those who maintain that the pursuits of science are in general unfavorable to religion." Therefore, Babbage composed this work---which he called the "Ninth Bridgewater Treatise"---to support notions such as that "The truths of natural religion rest also on the testimony of our external senses, but united with that internal consciousness of intention of design which we experience in our own breast... Revealed religion rests on human testimony; and on that alone. Its first and greatest support arises from natural religion."

He argues that an engine, "for which, after its original adjustment, no superintendence is required, displays far greater ingenuity than that which demands, at every change in its law, the direct intervention of its contriver."

Interestingly, Babbage criticizes Scottish philosopher David Hume's argument against miracles on probabilistic grounds, and concludes, "provided we can assume that independent witnesses can be found of whose testimony it can be stated that it is more probable that it is true than that it is false, we can always assign a number of witnesses which will, according to Hume's argument, prove the truth of a miracle." (Chap. X) [This is certainly a more interesting argument than Christian apologist C.S. Lewis's argument---in his book Miracles---that Hume's argument is circular.]

He concludes on the thought, "It is for you to determine whether the trains of thought I have excited have lowered or exalted your previous notions of the power and the knowledge of the Creator."

About the Author

Robert M. McManus is the McCoy Associate Professor of Leadership Studies and Communication at the McDonough Leadership Center at Marietta College in Ohio. He co-edited Leading in Complex Worlds (Jossey-Bass) and has served as the Chair of the Leadership Education MIG for the International Leadership Association.

Gama Perruci is the Dean of the McDonough Leadership Center at Marietta College in Ohio. He also serves as a consultant for The New York Times (nytimesinleadership.com) and leadership session facilitator for Dartmouth College’s Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences.

Fantastic Reading

I loved these books the first time I read them. I love them more the second time because the bonus material adds so much to understanding the 2 major male characters. As always with Ms Lance's writing, I want more time with the characters, more time to be lost in the story. The writing is superb; the characters are so real & true I want to invite them to dinner & pick their brains. The animals are always welcome & I would adopt any or all of them. As to the storyline, it could be ripped from tomorrow's headlines if we are not careful. Kathryn Lance is an old & dear friend who happens to write exceptionally good books.

Pandora's Promise was a completely satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, so I didn't expect the box set's extra material to add more than interesting details. However, it deepened my understanding of the characters and their motivations so much that I'm going to re-read all three books.

I’m not very good at writing reviews

I’m not very good at writing reviews, but I felt I had to write something because, even though I generally don’t like post-apocalypse stories, I really loved this one. The third book adds a great and surprising conclusion to the original first two books and is by far the best thing the author has written. The addition of the extra material in the “boxed set” adds more background to the story. Because of this, the expense for the set was well worth it even though I already owed separate copies of all three books.
