Having a background in Ancient Greek history, but wanting to learn more about a deficiency - namely the art of ancient Greece, I tried exploring the availability of art history books that focused on ancient Greece. What I discovered in this accessible survey (which popped up first when I searched on Amazon) more than met my needs. And whetted my appetite for more.

In a well written book, Boardman explores the evolution of Greek art - from Mycenaean and Minoan civilization to the Hellenistic period and beyond (the legacy). In eight succinct chapters, richly illustrated, Boardman is able to expertly convey how Greek art changed. And not just in Athens, though a focus on Athens was a major portion of the book, but throughout the Greek speaking world. Boardman focuses on the intention of the art in Ancient Greece, trying to place it into context of how the peoples of the time saw it. This is especially gratifying for those of us who only see Greek art in museums, far removed from the purpose it served in the civilization that it came from.

If you have a good knowledge of Greek history and Greek mythology, then this is a good book to begin as an introduction to Greek art. Boardman focuses on art more than on political events so without that background in Greek history this book will not be as rewarding. My only complaint is that this book is not available as an eBook available for my iPad.

Well Illustrated Historical Survey

I was introduced to this book initially as a supplemental text in a college class on Ancient Greece many years ago. I picked it up again recently and found it to be a fascinating and enlightening survey of Greek Art History. Exploring the progression and connection between various periods, techniques and styles, the book is very well illustrated and edited. Each section contains numerous examples that clearly demonstrate the points made in the accompanying text. The earliest geometric works , the archaic styles of Minoan and Mycenaen culture, and the classical period are all well described and represented. To the general reader who is not an art historian this is an incredibly easy guide to follow that will enrich your understanding of the importance of these cultures and the works they left behind.

As with the other books in this diverse series, it provides what you are looking for. A bit dry, but that is to be expected. If you're looking for a great introduction to the subject, I would recommend this book. Especially if you don't want to fork out the money for The History of Art, or want something more in-depth.

Taken as a whole, Soyinka's early poetry may be viewed as a valiant effort to reconcile the mysterious legacy of the old with the often harsh realities of an entire continent's abrupt entry into the twentieth century.

Robert Goldman now offers a new look at Flood's efforts to shake the foundations of major league baseball. One Man Out takes readers back to the pre-steroid era when baseball was as much a passion as a pastime-and when race was often still a factor-to focus on decisions made in the courtrooms rather than the dugouts.

Flood claimed that the prevailing system was illegal because it violated the Sherman antitrust laws by allowing teams to monopolize the sport in a way that impeded players' freedom and financial gain-and was even unconstitutional because it, in effect, imposed a form of slavery. Baseball owners countered that players owed their success to the reserve system because it maintained competitive balance among teams and heightened interest in the game, which helped fund their high salaries.

Although the Supreme Court ruled against Flood, it left the door open to legislation that would remove baseball's special exemption from antitrust regulation and to future collective bargaining. With its credibility enhanced, the players' union continued negotiations until it finally won a version of free agency very similar to Flood's, with his final vindication coming in the form of the Curt Flood Act of 1998.

In replaying the confrontation between Flood and baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn, Goldman demonstrates that even a lost lawsuit, with its game-like competition, can be a landmark. And by telling the inside story of the case, he highlights a key labor relations issue in America's most popular sport. Robert M. Goldman is a professor of history in Richmond, Virginia, and an avid baseball fan. He is the author of Reconstruction and Black Suffrage and "A Free Ballot and a Fair Court": The Department of Justice and the Enforcement of Voting Rights in the South, 1877-1893.
