This is a beautiful, easy to read but hard to forget story about profound issues that we don't even think exist. A gem from a No

This is a beautifully novel with many layers of themes and thoughts. The Pick up that the tittles refers to is the story ofa romance between an undocumented engineer from an unnamed African country and a white upper middle class western young woman who fall in love with him as she tries to sort her own identity and place in the world. But this is not a romance, this is a serious philosophical work that is playfully and skillfuly embeded in the story of this young woman. What Nadine Gordiner wants us to see without having to preach about are the intellectual reasons behind the emigration of the educated youth and the price that eveyone in their society has to pay. In the descriptions of domestic life in that unnamed country we see the despair and the strength of the wives that have to stay behind when their educated husbands leave in search of jobs where they can use their skills. This is a beautiful, easy to read but hard to forget story about profund issues and more specifically about emigration that is not solely based on poverty. A gem.

Faulty Pickup !

I found the heroine did not reveal concretely the difficulties that such a racial mix can produce in the lives of the people. I found the "Pickup" too secretive about his intentions and plans for the future.

I think this world just isn't for me

WHAT I LIKED
•It was an interesting and really creative take on Cinderella! I liked how it tied into the Cruel Beauty world. It definitely felt like it really fit with CRUEL BEAUTY and how things overlapped.
•I was never quite sure exactly how the story would wrap up! It really kept me guessing.
•I loved Anax. And you know what, I really liked Maia too. I enjoyed their time together as well as how it all ended up happening.
•Ignifex! So interesting to see him again. Loved how it came back into play.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
•The ending…? It was kind of a toss-up for me. I liked it but at the same time, I don’t know if I did. Everything tied up but it wasn’t the ending I expected.
•Guys……. I just don’t think I’m a fan of the Cruel Beauty world. This novella definitely had the same feel to it but that helped me realize that it wasn’t necessarily the characters that I didn’t connect with. I think it might have been the world. I guess that will really make me reconsider whether I want to read the rest of this series when it comes out.

Amazingly Awesome!

If your mind inevitably links Cinderella with Disney, think again!

Ms. Hodge draws on older versions of a classic tale in this intense re-imagining of Cinderella and sets it in the universe of Cruel Beauty, her recent novel. So . . . demons, magic, Victorian technology, Graeco-Roman culture, and really bad bargains!

Also love: false love, twisted love, feigned love, true love and . . .

Well, I can't say any more without spoilers. I'll simply mention that Amazon sent it to my Kindle just after midnight, and I couldn't -- just couldn't -- go to bed until I'd finished it.

Between this book and Cruel Beauty, it’s clear that Hodge has a gift for creating relatably flawed, intriguingly self-aware heroines who’ve been forced into seemingly impossible positions. Maia’s particular situation comes courtesy of a bad bargain made by her mother on her behalf with the Gentle Lord. And as no bargain with the Gentle Lord ever ends favorably for anyone, Maia suffers the consequences for her mother’s great love, telling lie after lie, playing a part day after day to keep others from paying the price of her mother’s deal with the devil. But when she meets the engaging Lord Anax, a young man who’s fed up with falsehoods, Maia discovers how freeing the truth can actually be. But as she grows closer to Anax, the more she realizes that her lies may now be more necessary than ever. Her resulting dilemma, though perhaps a bit predictable, still made for a fantastic story.

So what made this story so fantastic, especially considering that I’m not usually a fan of the Cinderella story in general? Well, several things…

Maia. As I already mentioned. Maia’s a relatably flawed heroine whose situation is reaching a critical point. She feels honor bound to protect her household from her mother’s bargain, no matter how they might treat her, but after years of enduring abuses and ill-treatment, her “duty” has been taking it’s toll. Maia’s a genuinely decent person, but her goodness is a somewhat forced goodness as well, and it’s something she achieves by lying. Hers is an interesting and messy predicament, and I love these difficult, morally gray areas that Hodge seems to like dropping her heroines into, and ultimately, I just love the development of Maia’s character.

Stepsisters. The complicated relationship dynamic between Maia and her stepsisters is fascinating. As is true of most relationships, there are a lot of factors that color their interactions, and it’s not quite as black and white as simply writing them off as “wicked stepsisters.”

Anax. He is as tortured, and conflicted, and flawed as Maia, and I love it. I also love that this version of Cinderella does not limit Maia’s interaction with her “prince” to an evening (or several) of dancing. Though this was a short novella, the relationship that builds between Anax and Maia is surprisingly believable, satisfying, and substantial.

Twists and Turns. And lastly, I love how Hodge merges her idea of the Gentle Lord from Cruel Beauty with some of the elements from the “Aschenputtel” version of the Cinderella tale… among other things. A+ for cleverness.

Overall. A fantastic reimagining of Cinderella that puts several creative twists on the tale, adding some (much needed) bulk and depth to the story, while also expanding the world of Cruel Beauty.

You get a lot of book for your money

This isn't just a book for ad students and insiders, though I imagine they'd love it. I'm not an ad junkie myself, but I happen to love this book because it's a very different and interesting coffee table book, that you can spend hours looking at. The ads featured in the book are amazing - funny, clever, intriguing, sometimes works of art in themselves. And the captions explain what's going on, all that sly thinking and logic behind the ads. I find it's the kind of book that really gets people talking. But be forewarned - it's a huge book, so make sure you have a strong coffee table!

The Curmudgeon

Warren is the best there is when it comes to reviewing the current Ad scene. However there are some factaul errors in the book. i.e. He talks about the breakthrough work that PKL did for Smirnof vodka in the sixties... It was'nt for Smirnof, it was for Wolfschmidt Vodka. Even more important was the work PKL did to launch the first Xerox dry copier, with the famous "Monkey" commercial.
However, the most dramatic ommision was that there was absolutely no mention of Jack Tinker Associates, the InterPublic think tank that kick started Mary Wells into Wells Green Inc.
Otherwise, a great book.

The Advertising Bible

Wow! Every once in a while, maybe every decade, a book comes along that explores its subject so well, it truly is a BIBLE. That's this book on the ad game. Advertising has always affected me strongly---making me cry(the old AT&T "call home"), made me laugh("it must be the puppy chow" dog), made me puke(most any car ads, except the Crocidille Dundee ones, and ALL insurance commercials). Now, after reading this book, I understand more the why and how this stuff gets under my skin. If you're looking for a solid, thorough, complete take on the world of advertising, Berger's big, big text will give it to you. For a look at the hot-shots, tastemakers, and tastebreakers, the interviews are fast, punchy, pithy, funny, and sometimes infuriating. And for an entertaining overview, there are hundreds of color photos of favorite, famous, and infamous ads, with straight-from-the-horse's mouth captions. For all those wanna-be CEOs, who spend a fortune on MBAs in marketing(I have one in my family!!!!), save your time and money, all you need to know is here. What's Berger's next subject?

A Brutally Honest Review

I wasn't sure what I was going to be walking into when I picked up this book. I'm not sure what possessed me to read it, either. I think it sounded intriguing, going through a month-to-month series of a woman's year as an escort to pay off a debt accrued by her crappy father who put his drinking habits ahead of his own daughters. That all sounded dandy. I didn't realize until after I impulsively bought the book, that our new escort would be going through 12 different clients! Say whaaat? How is the author going to pull this off without making our headstrong sweet heroine look like a slut? I still don't have the answer to that, but I feel like it's going to be promising because the author has a way with words.

Let us be real here for a minute. This escort service is far fetched and unbelievable. It is simple logic that there are no women out there that can have six figure paychecks through a month's work as an escort. I know about these things. I've done extensive research into the life of even the finest escorts, and their payments would never amount to what lucky Mia is getting. But, unlike many readers who can't read a book of fiction without it being incredibly realistic in every sense of the word, I was completely okay with this. I love stretching things out and I liked the author's imagination. When I picked up the book, I was immediately drawn in. It takes a damn good writer to do that, and in only 105 pages no less.

The book is short. I can buy a book the same price and it can be a few hundred pages long with a HEA, but again, I feel book one in this series is worth it. Somehow the author has fleshed out these characters, this story line, and really had us in their world. I didn't feel like ANY of these characters were one dimensional. Even for its short length, there wasn't a page inside it that wasn't important or just filled with meaningless drivel. I applaud the author for her skills because I have been suckered into many serials that just have filler sex and empty pages of pointless conversations. No, with this, you can clearly feel the heroine's journey.

I really loved Wes. I think he was perfect. He made his want for Mia apparent. There were no conflicts between them. I kind of wanted him to buy out all her damn months just so he could have her, or SOMETHING. But, I know the way the author is writing this, that can't be the case, no matter how logical that would seem for a man falling for our heroine, the story must be with eleven other clients.

I can understand the hesitancy in readers walking into this. I'm admittedly very cautious about stepping into the next book. I just don't know how I can enjoy a series whose heroine is going to journey along with different men. Mostly, I'm upset that I might actually like the other men too. I might get as attached to them as I was to Wes, and I don't want that to happen. Like he says to Mia a few times, I don't want her to forget him. I want her to remember, and I'm nervous that she will have botched the entire thing up with her new profession. But then again, this is what happens when you read a damn good book. You start to wonder what avenues it will take, who will come into the pages, who will climb out of them. And for that reason alone I MUST read the next book. And it might blow my socks off like this one, or it might self implode into suckiness. I'm confident with the writer though. You're damn good with words. Do not stop.

Give this a try, readers! JUST DO IT.

This is not a book you start at bedtime lol! I became completely immersed. It's now 2:30am and I have to be at work at 7:00am. This read was completely worth the lack of sleep;) Great characters and great writing. I found myself rooting for them the whole way through. I can't wait to see what the next books have in store, and how she ends the series. Give this book a read!!

About the Author
Steve Taylor’s books, published in eighteen languages, include Waking from Sleep, Out of the Darkness, and The Fall. Since 2011, he has appeared annually in Mind, Body, Spirit magazine’s list of “the world’s 100 most spiritually influential living people.” He teaches at Leeds Beckett University and lives in Manchester, England.

A beautiful book, in form and content - full of wisdom and deep insight.

A beautiful book, in form and content - full of wisdom and deep insight. It's the kind of book you can carry around and open at random and always find something inspiring. It touches on all aspects of human life and resonates with truth. Often spiritual awakening is pictured as a blissful perfect state but this book shows that it isn’t always about bliss and harmony - it can be a disorienting and confusing, especially in the beginning. 'The old world is receding behind you, and you’re waiting at the threshold of the new, disoriented, wondering how to make sense of this strange place.'

Life can be struggle, but there is always sacredness and harmony in it, if we connect to your authentic selves and return to the present moment. 'The Core' is profoundly moving, and mirrors my own journey perfectly. 'A self you had to find, so that you could lose it.'

I enjoyed Eckhart Tolle's foreword too, in which he explains how the poetic is a natural expression of spirituality. This book is a fantastic example of that.

Taylor's messages are written in poetic form which makes for easy, gentle reading

The Calm Center: Reflections and Meditations for Spiritual Awakening by Steve Taylor was surely written by someone who has felt about that which he writes. When you feel stuck, lost, hopeless or tormented Taylor tells us there is hope. You aren't blocked, there is nothing wrong with you, "You're not breaking down but breaking through." What a hope filled message.

Taylor's messages are written in poetic form which makes for easy, gentle reading. An example From "The Mellow Glow," a message speaking to the aging process:

"Why fight against the fading glow of youth?
Why try to freeze a process that can't be stopped?
You're clinging too hard, that's why you're weary;
your face is lined with tension, not with age."

I believe he speaks the truth in the last line of this stanza and in every stanza of every poem.

The author speaks the truth as someone who is living it. He addresses topics that we contemplate each day, but perhaps are too afraid to vocalize. He addresses issues with which we've all struggled and tells us - in line after line - don't be too concerned, find The Calm Center and trust you'll find your answer there. He talks of death, gratefulness, sadness, strangeness, "The End of Success." His answer to "The End of Success," is:

"But now that there's no way forward
this is your chance to stop and look around.
Watch as the road behind you vanishes
and a landscape begins to emerge, as if through
morning fog --
a brilliant panorama, fresh and lush with meaning,
with no direction anywhere, only depth and space.
It was always here but you never saw it --
because you were never here."

Again, a hope filled message. Now you can explore the process of making your past successes richer, deeper, more meaningful.
A truly worthwhile book; a gentle, prodding for us all to look to the future. It's there waiting for us.

Beauty, Inspiration, and Compassion

This book is special. It is so real and authentic that every page feels like a mirror. Sometimes it was inspiring, at other moments it was reassuring, and yet mostly it was comforting – the comfort of reading a truth that resonates within, wordless, until someone finds a way to express it. Steve Taylor found a way to express it. With rare beauty and depth he is offering us a glimpse into Truth – the kind of truth that transforms you. The kind of truth after which a “you” barely exists. In his own words:
