Don't think twice about getting this cookbook!

Ok, I bought this for my married daughter. Thanks to this book, cheesecakes have become her "trademark." She kept telling me about all the amazing cheesecakes she was making from here, and the accolades from whoever she makes it for. I was drooling, long distance.

I finally decided to buy myself one! What a fantastic cookbook! I just made the Lemon Curd Swirl Cheesecake for Easter, and everyone was raving over it. The crust is made out of Lemon Oreos, and is good as the cheesecake itself! My husband used to think he didn't like cheesecakes, but he is changing his mind big time!!!

I made the Cranberry Orange Cheesecake for Christmas - out of this world. The perfect sweet-tart combo.

Made the Milk Chocolate Cheesecake for company a couple months ago - they couldn't stop raving about it.

The appetizer cheesecakes are phenomenal, too.

Cheesecakes, I have decided, is the ultimate "make ahead" desert. Try baking a pie the "day before" - good luck. Cheesecakes actually MUST be made ahead, which is perfect for me.

George Geary is TOP NOTCH. He has been a visiting chef at the cooking school in my hometown, and he is fabulous.

I just bought one more copy, as a wedding shower present, along with a PUSH PAN, which i now prefer (and George Geary also prefers) over the spring form. They never leak, and never require any foil, etc.

The only cheesecake cookbook you'll ever need...

I own at least three cheesecake cookbooks but this my favorite. The recipe instructions are clear and easy to follow even for those who are new to baking. Although not every recipe has a photo, the illustrations are stunning and you'll get a good idea of the finished products.
The book starts off with a great introduction that includes basic techniques and equipment, common ingredients and FAQ. Next are 200 recipes divided into twelve categories like Fresh Fruit, No-Bake and Savory Cheesecakes (you should never need another cheesecake recipe). Each recipe is accompanied by tips and variations as well as the author's valuable insights. Another plus for me is the baking technique does not require a waterbath which is tricky for a novice and can result in a soggy crust.
After searching everywhere online(including eBay) Amazon had the best price and you can even add a Fat Daddio cheesecake pan to your purchase to make sure you qualify for free shipping.

If you enjoy baking cheesecakes then you will enjoy this book! I have tried the following recipes and they turned out great: tiramisu, banana split, mango, and pineapple!
Easy to follow recipe and it even has an introduction on how to properly bake the cheesecakes.
note: the book doesn't mention baking in a waterbath but I do to prevent cracking.

One of the finest novels of the 20th century

OK, there's the fun of deciphering the characters: Camus, Sartre, de Beauvoir, Nelson Algren. But really, the weaving together of the love stories with the birth of existential thought and the struggle between political action and creative action post-war in one novel is about as good as it gets. If you want to read one book by de Beauvoir, this should be it. There are adults in this novel, and artists of consequence. I left the book feeling as though I understood the best of the French intelligentia as it struggled with leftist politics and communism and with its own sense that they were intellectuals in what was becoming a country or little consequence.

I loved the Mandarins so much that I immediately ordered and read She Came to Stay, her earlier novel. I don't recommend it. Still based on her life, the characters in She Came to Stay are self-absorbed and shallow without redeeming qualities. Perhaps it's only that they're young. There's the sense that the gamine in She Came to Stay, for all her bad faith, is in economic and sexual thrall to the de Beauvoir and Sartre characters. The ending is not prepared for in the least. It's just an easy out. You won't enjoy She Came to Stay unless you're already obsessed with the characters, and know that they're not the wise, rich characters of The Mandarins but perhaps the characters who will become, through the experience of the war and powerful minds engaged with the most important ideas of their times, those characters. They're characters-in-training.

About the Author

Dr. Timothy Noakes is Discovery health professor of exercise and sports science at the University of Cape Town and director of the medical research council/UCT research unit for exercise science and sports medicine at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands. Noakes received his MD from the University of Cape Town. He is a veteran of more than 70 marathons and ultramarathons. He is an editorial board member for many international sport science journals and a former president of the South African Sports Medicine Association. In 1999, he was elected as one of 22 founding members of the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Science Academy. Noakes is also a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. He and his wife, Marilyn Anne, reside in Cape Town, South Africa.

If you could only own one book...

I started training for a half marathon a few months ago and like everything that I do I totally immerse myself into it. So after buying some books on the various training aspects of running I came across this one. After reading the reviews on Amazon I had to buy it and it did not disappoint. I like how the book starts out with the science and biological aspects of running, for example types of muscle fibers, oxygen transport, running economy, etc. and then moves into more practical aspects of how that will affect your training. I really enjoy reading this book and it has helped me to understand the reasons behind the training modalities. I am now training for a marathon and along with my tempo runs, speed work and long runs, I have included this book in my training regimen as required reading. It's as enjoyable as those easy runs and if you could only own one book on running this would be it.

The run book to end all run books

Talk about a read and a half. This book has everything you ever wanted to know about running from how to go slow to how to go fast and how to eat while going slow or fast. It also covers going short, long and how to make a workout plan. Ever wondered why muscles cramp? Or how muscles stretch or contract or the effect going down hill has on your quads? Read this book. Be prepared though because this is ALLOT of book, don't expect to knock this thing out in a weekend. It's the source of sources and has all of the information that websites and other books have been parroting for years now.

Not a book for the Novice Marathoner, but a GREAT Resource for the Experienced

For beginning marathoners, this is by NO means a book for you to find your answer to the perfect training (unless you are a marathon runner with an exercise science background). I don't believe Noakes intended this book to be read by a novice runner. The information is simply too overwhelming. Enjoy following a simple training plan and getting nutirition information from your local run specialty store (and let the coaches and running store do all of the reading between the lines)!

For coaches and experienced marathoners, this is a great book that summarizes research. At the same time, Noakes doesn't leave out the details of training that are too often thought to be common knowledge such as training apparel.

As a college coach, I enjoyed reading this book for the scientific side of running that Noakes can contribute because of his background in exercise science. I simply do not have time to read through individual research publications, as Noakes has done, and then compile the information by subject matter.

This book should remain on the shelf for those times when you need a source of reference. The science of running is constantly evolving (and certainly has since the publication of this book). Coaching runners is about trial and error. Coaches must understand that every athlete is going to react to a stimulus differently. Thus, this is a great resource but should NOT be treated as the only source of training for runners in the 10k and up.

but otherwise is a very good introduction to this important subject

This book is a welcome addition to the marine electrical systems materials. The chapters on high voltage, on safety and maintenance, and on generators, motors and starters are a much needed update to the Hubert book. The only limitation of the book is that its focus is British, not American, ships, but otherwise is a very good introduction to this important subject. There are videos on you-tube which support this book. This is a second edition and has some new material.
