Dear Reader,

As an Australian author and one who has been lucky enough to explore most of this huge country I call home, I have no shortage of inspirational settings for my books. One of my favourite places is the Kimberley region of north-western Australia. It's a vast, rugged, ancient landscape of immense natural beauty. But it's also a remote and dangerous place for those who underestimate it. 

Like many visitors to the region, I was attracted by the promise of towering gorges, wild rivers, secluded waterfalls, ancient rock art and the hospitality of those who call the Kimberley home; the cattle graziers who survive and thrive on their vast outback stations. This is a place where men are men and their women stand tall and proud alongside them. 

I couldn't ask for a better setting for a romance book and as a longtime lover of western romance, coming up with the Molly Downs Outback Romance Series really was a no brainer. Molly Down's, a fictional cattle station situated in the remote Kimberley, is home to the Armstrong family and it's here we meet the fourth generation - siblings Scott, Dillon and Jess and their cousins Danny and Taylor. I'll be bringing all their romances to life as quickly as I can write them.

The first book of the series, Different This Time follows Scott's story. Sister Jess was next up in One Time Thing, followed by Dillon's tilt at romance in Breaking Free. And right now, I'm busy writing Taylor's story Eight Seconds to Forever, so be sure to keep an eye out for it. I hope you enjoy meeting the Armstrong's of Molly Downs.

He reached up and put his hand on her shoulder, lightly fingering the nape of her neck. 'So you don't want to pick up where we left off?' he asked softly.

Jess shook her head,trying to ignore Teague's caress and the heat from his body behind her. 'No,that wouldn't be a good idea,' she told him.

'Why not?' Teague whispered close to her ear. 'I still want you Jess and I know you still want me.'

'No I don't,' she denied breathlessly.

'Yes you do Jess. You can't hide the way your body responds to mine,' he growled against her neck.'It's okay,' he said when she shook her head. 'It's the same for me.' He slid his free hand down her arm to cover hers, then gently moved their joined hands between them so she could feel his arousal. 'You can help me with this Jess. We can help each other.'

'This isn't a good idea,' she breathed, pulling her hand away from his bulging crutch and trying to resist the light kisses he was trailing along her jaw line, but her chin lifted of its own volition, allowing him better access to her neck.

'Why not Jess?' Teague reasoned. 'We're here together. Seems like it would be a waste not to take advantage of the situation we find ourselves in.'

Jess is as free and untamed as the rural Australian wild she grew up in. Yet, her past has shaped the lonely situation she currently finds herself in.

Suddenly, Jess finds her heart superseding logic when she meets helicopter pilot, Teague. Jess must now re-evaluate her plans for the future and confront the demons of her past.

Everyone makes mistakes. Speaking as someone who makes many mistakes, I feel I have had enough experience in this area to state: our mistakes don't define us.

Every passing moment is another opportunity to make a change in our lives. I enjoyed watching Jess come to this conclusion.

I truly appreciated the author's descriptive powers. She re creates the Australian wild with words, but when translated in our imaginations, they morph into vibrant colors and magnificently defined shapes.

Another ability the author possesses is character development. Her characters are authentic and at times maddening real.

Overall, a well written novel laced with romance, the wild and a dash of humor. My favorite kind.

The book is riddled with grammatical errors and misspellings. Despite this irritating distraction, I found the book to be thoroughly enjoyable. The story is well crafted and were not for the lack of effective proofreading my rating would have been 5. Highly recommended.

About the Author
W. Darlene Reid, BMR(PT), PhD is a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She earned her physical therapy degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1979. She went on to complete graduate studies in pathology at the University of British Columbia and obtained her PhD in 1988.

Dr. Reid performs graduate professional entry-level and graduate research teaching related to physical therapy respiratory care and muscle injury, and she supervises research by graduate and undergraduate students in the Rehabilitation Sciences, Kinesiology, and the Experimental Medicine programs at the University of British Columbia. Physical therapy teaching is focused on research design, exercise physiology, and physical therapy management of patients with cardiopulmonary conditions. Research graduate teaching is related to exercise physiology, advanced techniques in the management of cardiovascular and respiratory patients, and research design. In addition, Dr. Reid is involved in continuing education related to these areas.
Dr. Reid has held scholarship salary awards from the B.C. Health Research Foundation and the Killam Foundation. Her areas of research interests include muscle injury, muscle performance, and pulmonary rehabilitation. Clinically, she has specialized in physiotherapeutic treatment for patients with chronic pulmonary disease. Her clinical research has focused on the understanding of mechanisms contributing to poor muscle performance and noninvasive measures of muscle dysfunction in people with chronic disease.

Dr. Reid has published more than 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts in addition to abstracts, review papers, and chapters. She has been an invited speaker at a number of national and international conferences related to physical therapy, intensive care, and pulmonary medicine in Canada, the United States, Japan, Belgium, and Mexico.

Dr. Reid has served on several national and local committees related to cardiorespiratory physical therapy and research including the Cardiorespiratory Division Executive of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, the Executive of the Canadian Physiotherapy Cardiorespiratory Society of Lung Association, and Co-chair of the Scientific Program for the Canadian Respiratory Conference. She is also Associate Editor of the Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal.


Frank Chung, BSc(PT), MSc graduated with a BSc (Physical Therapy) degree from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1981 and obtained an MSc degree in interdisciplinary studies (respiratory and exercise physiology) from the University of British Columbia in 1989.

He has taught at the School of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of British Columbia, instructed postgraduate physical therapy courses, engaged in research and knowledge transfer, contributed as manuscript reviewer for Physiotherapy Canada, and published more than 20 papers in peer-reviewed journals in areas related to physical therapy practice. Frank was a member of the national examination test construction and implementation subcommittee of the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulatory Boards. He is also an examiner of the Canadian Physical Therapy National Examination. He works as a physical therapist at Burnaby Hospital in British Columbia, Canada.


Kylie Hill, BSc(Physiotherapy), PhD is an Associate Professor at the School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science, Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. She graduated from Curtin University with a BSc (Physiotherapy) degree in 1994 (with distinction). She has more than 10 years of clinical experience and has worked as a senior physiotherapist across 3 states in Australia. Her main areas of clinical experience include the management of patients admitted to the intensive care unit as well as following cardiothoracic and major abdominal surgery. In 2006, Dr. Hill completed a PhD (with commendation from the chancellor) in the area of pulmonary rehabilitation. In 2009, she completed 3.5 years of ­postdoctoral study at the University of Toronto, with Professor Dina Brooks and Roger Goldstein.

She is currently involved in teaching undergraduate and graduate entry master's physical therapy students at Curtin University. She is also heavily involved in the supervision of masters by research and doctoral students at Curtin University. She is a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association and the European Respiratory Society and was the national convenor of the Physiotherapy Special Interest Group for the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand. She has presented at several national and international scientific meetings and has published more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals in areas related to physical therapy practice.

The Road Less Travelled

Reading this book was a deeply disturbing and yet very moving and ultimately a positive experience. The author and I are basically the same age and grew up in the same country at the same time. Our lives are so different and yet very similar. I have spent my adult life in the mental health field and have heard horrible life stories. But among the worst are those of religious abuse from those who were trapped in a religious ideology that condemned them to hell for attempting to question, and be sane and healthy.

Orva was born and raised Amish. His whole childhood was full of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual abuse. And yet somehow, something very sane, very spiritual managed to survive and lead him out of this religious hell into a life of honest investigation, discovery and love.

Without suffering, how many of us would look deeply into our lives? Suffering turns some of us into monsters, others into truly spiritual beings. The truly spiritual path is not easy and so it is the road less travelled.

Like Orva, after many years of working with people, I have also concluded that religion breaks the spirit of the person and keeps them chained in a prison of ignorance, guilt, shame, despair, confusion, hatred and fear. Most do not have the courage to ask the simple questions of, "Is this true?", "how do I know what is really true?", "where is the love and forgiveness?"

Orva, instead of being broken by his experiences as a child, somehow survived and even thrived. He is no longer a religious man, but is profoundly spiritual. He took the road less travelled. It was not an easy one. He had to face many demons in his journey.

Although this book is disturbing, I couldn't put it down and read it right through. I feel a kinship with Orva because even though our early lives were very different, we travelled similar paths that have arrived in this space of spiritual freedom.

This is a hopeful story. Thank you, Orva, for sharing so honestly.

A Worthwhile Boy

I've said it before: Many people set out on a spiritual path because what they've been raised to believe doesn't make sense anymore - or directly contradicts their reality - and they can no longer tolerate the dissonance.

We'd like our lives to make sense. Our lives SHOULD make sense. Yet sometimes, a deeply unsettling feeling washes over everything we witness and are told. When we start to get to the age of reasoning (about age 13, by my way of figuring) we realize that something is terribly wrong, but we don't have the capacity to effectively deal with it. At that point, we turn to either conformity - going along with the parents in order to get along - or rebellion, either open or passive.

Rebellion isn't much of a sideline, given enough time. At the least, it's no good way to live, as the thoughts that brought us to rebellion continue to nag and plague us, causing poor behavior and the potential for self-destruction.

Reaching the point of exasperation, we look for answers, but they are not usually to be found in the vapid and stale principles of fundamentalist religion. We may try different religions, different practices, different methods of insight, perhaps even shunning the world and its accepted beliefs altogether, if one is lucky or tenacious enough. Seek we must.

Orva's path is much like my own. That's why I like to call him my Brother, though we've never met in person.

All of us walk through the world with a unique footstep, and yet the dynamic that causes us to seek a better life runs common to many. Orva and I were fortunate enough to `meet' in our searching. He seemed like a great guy, but I never could have imagined...

Beatings. Whippings. Rejection. Insults. Torment. Hate. Derision. Brutality. Devilish siblings. A complete lack of love, kindness, and affection that any parent should shower upon any one of their children, regardless. Period.

Orva's new book will startle you. You may even start to think, "Man, I though I had it rough. My upbringing was easy by comparison." I was outraged when I read the story. Were I to have walked in Orva's shoes, it's quite likely I would have done something very, very bad, either to myself or to my tormentor. One thing that I've taken away from the read is that there are people out there who are extremely warped in their notion of right and wrong, yet call themselves pious and righteous. (Well, I've long known that, but Orva's father took it to the extreme.) I think the first part of the book hammers home just how bad this can get given certain fundamentalist ideas. I never before knew that it ran quite so deep.

I hated to read this book, and yet I simply couldn't put it down. Through chapter after chapter, Orva tells horrible and haunting stories of years of abuse at the hands of his father, a devoutly religious Amish preacher. (Go figure.) Orva chronicles his attempt to conform, then his acts of rebellion. Finally, toward the end of the book we see Orva finding his way, and then passing along his insights and recommendations so that others might have an easier time on the path...

Which is how it should be. People who have gone before should leave signposts.

Orva is a gift to those who might think there's no way out, and his book will help some people, to be sure.

I'm just glad that my brother has found peace in his life. How did he do it? You gotta read this book.

Worthless Boy - But Not a Worthless Story

Imagine being the outsider amongst a dozen siblings. You are the one who is eager to fit in and be a good worker like your older brothers, but you are labeled "worthless" by your father. You yearn for the attention of your mother, but she is too busy raising your younger siblings and attending to the family household.

Imagine being this child in an Amish household, eager for the attention that a young blossoming mind deserves, but lost in a world of religious stronghold and misunderstanding.

This was the childhood of Orva Schrock, and this book, Worthless Boy, is his memoir. Divided into 2 parts consisting of just seven chapters over 81 pages, Schrock wastes not a word painting a picture of a troubled and disturbed childhood, a boy yearning for the attention of his parents but getting most persecution instead.

The book begins with this sentence: I was born as fuel for hell, or so was the deepest metaphysical understanding I was capable of.

Part 1 of the book begins when Orva is three and traces several concrete moments throughout his childhood and teen years. He longed for the attention of his father, but got mostly verbal and physical abuse which resulted in quite a bit of mental anguish which led to Orva becoming quite the young rowdy boy who acts out for attention.

Add to this the "hardcore" religious beliefs of his Amish upbringing and the move of his large family for better work to keep the family fed. Part 1 ends at his ninth grade year of school, which was also the end of his formal education.

Part 2 is a quick glimpse into the 50 years that have passed as Orva reflects on the death of his father, and spends one whole chapter quoting from various books he has read and which made him a stronger man.

Though the book is very heart wrenching, and impeccably polished when it comes to editing and formatting, it is more of a long essay and carries quite a hefty price for a book that is under 100 pages and hard cover. But, our stories are not always full of detail with long drawn out pictures. Such is the joy of self-publishing, and this is Orva's story.

About the Author
TÜLAY ADALI, PhD, is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Machine Learning for Signal Processing Laboratory at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her research interests are in statistical and adaptive signal processing, with emphasis on nonlinear and complex-valued signal processing, and applications in biomedical data analysis and communications.

Simon Haykin, PhD, is Distinguished University Professor and Director of the Cognitive Systems Laboratory in the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University. A world-renowned authority on adaptive and learning systems, Dr. Haykin has pioneered signal-processing techniques and systems for radar and communication applications, culminating in the study of cognitive dynamic systems, which has become his research passion.
