I have learned a lot from tis book too

This is a witty, comprehensive, and carefully researched book. The author's experience with different cultures and her deep understanding of her own culture makes for fascinating reading for both international people and Americans.

I consider it a long overdue exposé of American behavior because Asitimbay is fearless in the issues she covers--they are the very same topics we are afraid to discuss in public. For example, the author explores how we self-identify ourselves in the U.S., both racially and ethnically, versus how our government categorizes us. When Asitimbay reveals the various ways we practice our patriotism and religion in the U.S., she clearly breaks new ground as a cultural commentator.

In addition to being an important book from a sociological standpoint, What's Up America? is also a beautifully written one. It will appeal to readers of many backgrounds because it is so easy to read.

A Foreigner's Guide to Understanding Americans is an extremely useful guide for foreign travelers or exchange students visiting America, as well as American hosts who may not be aware of the unconscious, ingrained aspects of their culture that their foreign guest will have to adapt to. What's Up America? succinctly summarizes in plain terms the broad history, unwritten social mores, and generally accepted rules of conduct in American society, in particular emphasizing both the difference between American society as it really is versus how it is portrayed in TV and movies, and particular American language idioms that may be confusing to a non-native English speaker. Chapters cover dating, religion, eating habits, economic and business customs, and much more. Though especially intended for foreign travelers, What's Up America? is fascinating reading for Americans as well, since it gives a no-nonsense, plain-terms summary of America's modern culture, revealing subconsciously internalized forces that drive us in spite of ourselves.

Entertaining and Illuminating - for visitors and citizens!

This breezy book skips, digs, and zooms across the United States' cultural landscape. The author, an ESL college instructor, entertains readers with unconventional insights based on census figures, national surveys, and personal experiences. Sometimes provocative, often witty, and always direct, the book deserves a wide readership among visiting students, recent immigrants, and American citizens. Of course, being a college instructor, I try to resist the considerable appeal of the broad generalizations, but these snapshots of "typical Americana" illuminate the nation's many eccentric traditions, habits, and lifestyles with humor and style. Easier to read than David Brooks or Bill Bryerson, this accessible book fills a niche between popular culture and the academic world. Call this sociology light with a comic twist. I strongly recommend this clever book of accessible, enjoyable cultural criticism. Perfect for a beach day - or gift to a friend traveling to the United States for the first time.

Like the reviewer before me, I am not impressed by this book. First of all, the whole premise is problematic--the fact that it's written by a male Dom directed at female submissives who clearly have little or no BDSM experience makes it seem like he's trolling for new playthings, and inexperienced ones at that (yikes). I don't know if that's an accurate portrayal of the kind of person he is, but if not, he really needs to put a lot more thought into his writing because, as is, it's sort of overly-specific. It might as well be titled, "7 Things Submissive Women Can Do That I Personally Enjoy."

Second, some of this stuff is not smart--many forms of self-bondage are unsafe and dangerous, even if it doesn't seem that way. Do not tie yourself up, seriously. Even if it sounds fun (and it kinda does), if something goes wrong, you're in big trouble. As a Dom, I am responsible for my submissive's safety and well-being, after all, and that includes keeping an eye on them if there's anything like that involved. This is the main reason why I'm writing this review - just to say, whoa, maybe not.

Third, the whole idea of a "submissives how-to" kinda defeats the purpose of being submissive, at least from my perspective as a Dom. The stuff that he suggests in this book, like I said in my first paragraph, is stuff that he probably likes, but it may just be irrelevant depending on the relationship. It's no replacement for actually talking to your Dom -- believe me, we probably have suggestions for you, haha.

About the Author

Bryce Bigger is an interactive designer and developer. He is the owner of The Bigger Design, a hotbed of interactive magic making for clients including the U.S. Navy, Oracle, Ping Golf, Lockheed Martin, and the National Institutes of Health. He created The Sentinel Project, an open-source autonomous foam dart gun system, which was shown at the AdobeMAX tradeshow to spotlight its innovative use of Adobe AIR technology. A really fun read; look forward to my own blaster project

I didn't really expect to read this book from cover to cover in one sitting. I did simply because it is a really fun book to read.

Written in exuberant style, it is one part instruction manual, one part autobiography of creative evolution, and three parts shout of encouragement to new tinkerers and old geeks (TLSF Death Blossom!!!). I look forward to giving my copy to a 10 year old neighbor who loves to build stuff and loves graphics and games. I don't think his little sister will thank me for setting him up to build a fully robotic Nerf launcher, but this project is such a great blend of fun and learning that it will be worth it.

On technical note, this book is also a great little introduction to the wide range of capabilities in the "Processing" programming language. Prior to this, I thought of Processing only as the basis for the Arduino IDE. This book has opened my eyes to lots of new possibilities to use Processing to knit together all kinds of software/graphics/physical computing projects.

helpful, entertaining intro

Intro books don't come any better than this - the author provides clear instructions for navigating Processing and Arduino to build a robotic NERF weapon. The step-by-step directions are easy to follow and not too complicated. (The pictures really help too!) I was surprised how funny and entertaining the writing is, since I was expecting just a how-to manual. Some of the side stories about Adobe and MailChimp are actually pretty cool.

I'm a complete novice to programming, but I've played with NERF guns for years, which is what drew me to the book. It's an awesome project - great idea, great book, great buy.

Inspiring and easy to follow!

This is such a fun, easy to follow book.
If you have ever only briefly thought about doing any physical computing/coding, but have been turned off (like me), thinking its too overwhelming or hard to learn... do yourself a favor and buy this book!

The author does a great job of walking you through the basics, providing great visuals and snippets of code to make your first project a reality.
Great writing, especially since he uses his own real projects as examples. It's not some boring, hard to read instruction manual.

It's inspiring too.
He reminds you throughout the book to tinker and experiment; and how a playful side project/hobby can lead to real work and employment opportunities.
I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to building my own projects soon!

Great summer activity project!

I stumbled upon this book while looking for resources on NLD (nonverbal learning disorder), which has caused my bright, 12-year-old son to flounder both academically and socially since fourth grade. It is FULL of excellent activities for children who have difficulty picking up social cues and interacting appropriately with their peers. Because my son works so hard during the regular school year, and typical summer programs and camps only cause him anxiety, we now opt to let him just take time off from organized activity during his summer breaks. But he will be assisting in the family home business, and now we plan to incorporate the exercises in this book into his daily schedule. They are interesting and fun, and even I look forward to working on them.
