Transitioning Border

Borders transition for an array of reasons, time being the indicator of how a new generation comes to rely on the histories of their land(s), reminiscing about what was and accepting (not eloquently though) that change alters realities. This anthology of voices are direct proof of how recent experiences, particularly in the Southwest region, have caused a metamorphosis in our communities. We slowly alienate ourselves from our ties to el otro lado because in our minds, borders close and fears become our distances.

As a fan of many of the prolific authors who form a part of this anthology, I am delighted current reflections from the border are represented well.

I got a DEFECTIVE one!!

The quality of the book is aweful! I got a defective one and, because my class started using the textbook after the refund deadline (I didn't take off the plastic until I needed it for class), it appears I'm stuck with it. It really upsets me to have paid $113.97 for this book, when I can't even read some of the text! I'm so disappointed.

It's my profession so I bought it for school. What I didn't realize is that there is a new one every year, there are some minor changes, but I learned why doing a school training program, that if you work on your own doing remote coding, you will need to purchase the current one. I taught I would be able to use this book for years to come. It would be cool if you could rent it, but I don't think there are those options. If you can link up with another student who did this class in the same year, see if you could borrow it, or purchase it cheaper.

The coding are very easy to determine and locate. I think I prefer CPT coding instead, but you have to make sure you get all of the procedures. It was fun.

A compilation of 22 cases involving manual and mechanical diagnoses and treatment, each case authored by a different therapist or therapists. The international cast includes Maitland, McKenzie, Jull et. al. The case format is easily readable and engaging. This 445 page book also contains a summary chapter on enhancing clinical reasoning skills. As Einstein is reputed to have said: "Example isn't another way to teach, it is the only way to teach."

This book does a nice job of teaching and is an excellent exercise in clinical reasoning.

Cheap photocopy of original?

The book itself is excellent. But the quality of printing is like photocopying a textbook and getting it binded professionally.
I thought this practise was illegal? Hard not to feel a little ripped off!

VERY complete & well-organized for a compact guide

This is more a concise small-format encylopedia of North American trees than a field guide. It's amazingly comprehensive, containing information on native species and a lot of cultivated imports. For a single taxon, photographs of leaves (on a white background, for clarity), bark, flowers, and fruit, along with the text, are arranged on a single page so there's no jumping around. Line art is used only to help define terms or help navigating the keys. The text contains a major identification tip to look for in each species.

As a field guide I think the identification keys are its weakest point. They start, as all lay-oriented keys, with leaf arrangement and shape, and then quickly move to flower and fruit characters. For most of the year you don't have flowers and fruits, so I wish the keys concentrated more on leaf details (margins, venation, size). Experienced enthusiasts will spend more time in the index than the keys; the inexperienced will probably spend a lot of time paging through, looking at the excellent pictures, for a pattern match. Because the guide is so comprehensive, though, there are a LOT of pictures to page through. It's printed on thick, durable paper, though this makes it rather big and heavy for the pocket.

An ideal combination might by this guide paired with May T. Watts' "Tree Finder: A Manual for the Identification of Trees by Their Leaves," only $4.00 from Amazon & truly vest pocket-sized. It has excellent keys for the layperson who lives east of the Rockies.

The Amazon price for the NWF guide makes it a steal. You won't find this much information about trees in one small volume anywhere else.

I give it 5 stars for the information & 4 as an identification guide.

THIS, is the book!

I have written many reviews, in here, on tree field guides. I am a Certified Arborist who works in the field on a near-daily basis. I have been asked, in the "Comments" section after each review, what field guide I would recommend. I have always suggested Peterson and, I believe, Audubon. Now, I will add, and STRONGLY RECOMMEND, this guide. It simply is THE BEST guide out there, today. The photos are very clear, the descriptive passages informative. Measurements are given in inches and feet, unlike some inferior guides I've reviewed that only have metric data. I am not, by the way, trying to insinuate that metric makes those guides inferior. It's just that in the US, we have an easier time with SAE. This guide is a pleasure to use. It makes for interesting reading on its own, even if you're not doing ID work. So, in closing, if you need a great field guide, or if you want to read up on the trees of N. America, THIS is the book!

So before I bought this one I had the Field guides for Insects and bugs and birds of North America (separate books). I used those for a science project and found it absolutely useful and a must have! I bought the two from Barns and Nobles and decided that I needed a cheaper price if I was going to get the one on trees and Amazon of course had it :)

I'd recommend this book to beginners through advanced! I'm a beginner and I was able to spot things right off the bat and I love being able to identify the world around me! I also ordered the one on Wild Flowers so that'll be coming in soon :) I would really say this is a book that should be in ever house hold because we should all be able to identify at least a little of the world we live in. AND this has maps included so you know exactly where the tree is!! I'll include a video so you can see it!!

An Exceptional Beginning to a Fascinating Series

I read this book when it first came out and was immensely impressed. I re-read this book six years ago when I belatedly realized that RKT had concocted a series instead of a stand-alone book. I was as impressed with the book the second (and even the third) time around as I was the first. I have since rushed to the store each year for the latest installment of the Karp-Ciampi chronicles and have not been disappointed.
No Lesser Plea is a well-plotted legal thriller with interesting bad guys, witty dialogue, believable legal antics, and fascinating main characters. If you a reader of this genre and you have no discovered RKT give this book a try.
There are several things I greatly admire in this series of books that does not come across by reading the first one. The most important thing is the development of the relationship between Butch & Marlene (and their family and hangers-on) over the course of the series. These characters become real people (rather more witty and articulate than the ordinary person) who have problems, disagreements, and day-to-day lives outside the pivotal legal issue being presented in the book. A second thing I like about the series is the development of current legal issues through the narrative format. By having Butch and Marlene on different sides of a question, the reader is exposed to moral and legal complexities of today's society. The last thing that I love about these books is their humor. There is at least one point in every book that sends me into gales of laughter. This is usually a bit of witty dialogue between Butch/Marlene and/or their children, but it also can be an exceptionally apt, pithy description of a situation or person. Anyway, this is one of the most alive series of books I have read and I would love to meet these characters (but not live near them since there does seem to be an inordinate amount of gunplay involved in their neighborhood).

A legal thriller that gets lost in its own antics

Robert K. Tannenbaum has created a well-regarded series of legal thrillers set in New York City and featuring D.A. Roger 'Butch' Karp. I have read others in this series. This one is the first and is set from 1970-1973.

The main legal focus of the book and the source of the title is the case of Mandeville Louis, a user of men and women who masterminds a murderous liquor store heist and causes his get away driver to die from an overdose. Louis has a plan to avoid punishment by faking to be mentally ill and eventually plea bargain his way to freedom based on time served in a mental institution rather than a harsher penal institution (shades of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest').

Butch Karp sniffs out the true legal motives of Louis and writes in magic marker on the case file 'No Lesser Plea' just in case it comes up for review again and he is not informed.

The legal story is quite good but Tannenbaum's story bogs down in the antics of the District Attorney's office (it reminds me of the movie M*A*S*H but without the excuse of an insane war to push the characters to the edge of sanity). Butch's friend Guma is insufferable (he drags pistols out of the evidence room to play cops and robbers and then promptly loses some of them, he sets of a C-4 charge in a reflection pool during an office garden party, has sex on his office desk and so on) and the whole office politics scene is too hurried. If Tannenbaum had paced himself a bit these antics would have been more tolerable. As they are presented, they distract from the legal thriller at hand.

I usually don't like court room stories. I'm more a private eye or police procedural typr. But I really liked this one. It gave what appeared to be a believable look at the workings of a big city DA's office (I know real big city assistant DA's are rolling their eyes at this but take a deep breath and relax). I was fully engaged by the story and liked how the author carried the story over time without losing steam. The office politics subplot was interesting and more than padding. I give 5 stars sparingly so don't take the four stars as faint praise. Find it and read it, the book is worth your while.
