Clouds of Secrecy: The Army's Germ Warfare Tests Over Populated Areas, by Leonard A. Cole

In the 1970s Americans learned for the first time that they had been used for decades as unsuspecting guinea pigs in a series of astonishing experiments conducted by the US Army. Military researchers had been secretly spraying clouds of bacteria over populated areas in order to study America's vulnerability to biological weapons. Many civilians have suffered illness, even death, as a consequence.

From Publishers Weekly
This disturbing study, based on government records, courtroom testimony and interviews, focuses on biological-warfare testing and the U.S. Army's expanding program to develop cheaper and more effective biological weapons. Cole traces the growth of the biological arsenal during World War II, reviews the scientific literature (which questions the Army's contention that bacteria used in tests are harmless) and assesses the spraying of several American locales, including San Francisco and the New York subway system. Cole charges that the Army failed to monitor the health of the targeted population, and quotes from a 1981 trial in a case brought by a San Francisco family, one of whose members is believed to have died as a result of the 1950 test in that city. Reflecting on "the human capacity to confuse good intentions with harmful actions," the author, who teaches at Rutgers University, concludes with a discussion of the ethics of spraying unsuspecting citizens with bacteria and the need for protection against such experiments.

From Library Journal
An in-depth analysis of the U.S. Army's biological warfare (BW) research/testing from World War II to the present. Cole (Rutgers Univ.) details unpublicized activities at the Army's BW headquarters, the secret "test" spraying of bacteria over major American cities, and a court case on one such test. He also examines the charges of Soviet "yellow rain" and genetic engineering. His research is solidon-site visits, interviews, congressional hearings, court testimony, government documents, and scientific and scholarly literature. While this careful work is not a polemic, it raises a specter of government secrecy and deception with chilling implications. One of the best efforts on a topic long concealed from the American public. Clifton E. Wilson, Political Science Dept., Univ. of Arizona, Tucson

Review
Cole . . . effectively buttresses his arguments with evidence from primary sources and makes a solid, easily readable case for the need for public and congressional oversight. (CHOICE)

Cole's book addresses a serious structural problem of constitutional democracy. It is obvious from a reading . . . that the public should demand more protection and Congress should mandate it. (Science)

Clouds of Secrecy focuses on the major issue in our state at this time. I commend it to every Utahan and to every American. (Professor Edwin Firmage, School of Law, University of Utah)

. . . Through painstaking investigation of participants and publications, he has written not only a real horror story but, even more important, shown how conscientious individuals were led to risk the health and even the lives of fellow Americans in several cities. (Poltics and The Life Sciences)

Cole has produced a penetrating study of the Army's clandestine 20-year biological warfare testing operation. . . . a persuasive case that Army planners knew-or should have known-they were exposing the young, the old and the medically 'compromised' to infections at 239 sites around the country. (David Wier, New York Times Book Review)

Biological Warfare Primer
By A Customer
I have read a few books on the topic recently, and this one is short (~150 pages) and concise. Cole gives well documented examples of bio-warfare "experiments" conducted within the US on it's own populace as well as in Europe. The best part of the book documents the lawsuit of an American citizen who sued the US over the death of a family member who died from the government flu and lost becuase the court said what the feds were doing were not illegal. How nice. Need a quick reminder that the military and judicial branches of the government are not your friend? Get this book.

Surprising Information
By A Customer
This book contains shocking but carefully documented details about germ warfare tests conducted by the U.S. Army in the 1960s. It is an eye opener about a range of Army experiments that exposed millions of Americans to various bacteria without their knowledge. The purpose supposedly was to see how vulnerable Americans would be to a germ attack. The book is clearly written and provides riveting descriptions of many of the tests. The most amazing thing about the tests was the number of American cities and their populations that were targeted. They included New York City, San Francisco, St. Louis and hundreds of other cities and towns. The germs were not true warfare agents like anthrax, but they apparently caused several people to become sick, some perhaps fatally. In the current climate of fear about terrorism, Clouds of Secrecy provides an invaluable reminder that secret government actions intended to protect the public may themselves create risks to its safety.

Clouds of Secrecy
By Carl Mauney
An interesting book on biological weapons testing during the 1950's. Unfortunately understanding the behavior of biological weapons was and is a necessity. This book reviews a few of the 239 admitted tests. It does not provide in depth information on the individual tests such as plume spread or pattern. It does expose the use of U.S. cities as the test tubes for these experiments. Several times the author refers to alleged violations of the BWC by the former USSR. As history has proven, they were not alleged but rampant violations of the BWC. Open air testing is likely to remain a priority for biological defense. This book describes what may be happening in your own backyard.

A Nice Addition to the Ghibli Art of Series
By Bryan Stone
I've really enjoyed the Ghibli "Art of..." books published by Viz. I'm a cartoonist and I keep the books near my work area for quick reference. The Art of the Wind Rises is no exception, I'm glad to have it on my shelf. However, I found it lacking when compared to the others, especially the Art of Ponyo. To me the Ponyo book really set a high standard with a good balance of storyboards, preliminary work, backgrounds, composite images from the film and interviews. This book doesn't manage to find that kind of balance.

First of all there are almost no storyboards, in fact I only saw one page of five storyboard drawings which is used twice, and it feels like far fewer concept sketches than previous books. For me getting to see the preliminary work is the attraction of these books, not final images from the movie. Also, some key scenes from the movie, most notably the outstanding earthquake scene, feel like they barely made it into the book. The actual earthquake only gets five images on a two page spread including one (very beautiful) background painting and four final images from the movie. The post earthquake chaos however gets several pages which is nice since there are so many great crowd shots. Maybe the lack of balance is due to the massive amount of content they had to cover? Maybe there are so few storyboards to encourage people to buy the storyboard book?

With all that said, this is a big book with a lot of content. There are interviews with Yoji Takeshige, Kitaro Kosaka, Michiyo Yasuda, Atsushi Okui, Miyazaki's original project proposal, a short biography of Jiro Horikoshi and Tatsuo Hori ( Jiro in the movie is a composite of these two men) and the entire script translated from Japanese. Although the preliminary work is few and far between what is included is pretty good, including some of Miyazaki's airplane drawings. There's also an overview of the digital and photographic effects used in the movie...if you're into that kind of thing.

Overall this book is an unbalanced but nice addition to the to the series.

*Update - After reading the interviews I learned that Miyazaki actually only made a handful of concept drawings before they started production which explains why there aren't many in the book.*

A beautiful glimpse into the art of Studio Ghibli
By A. Cervera
One of the great differences between the way Studio Ghibli works and how a movie is developed in America is that every film is born from the idea of one man. This book showcases the genius of Mr. Miyazaki in what it will probably be his last film effort, from the concept sketches to the final look of the film. Even though there is a book with more images than information about the making of "The Wind Rises", it's a must have for every Ghibli fan.

Lovely
By TP
This is another great piece in Hayao Miyazaki's collection. It is beautifully done as all the others. It has pre sketches of all/ most of the characters, it has a lot of scene pictures that have been watercolored. And a script in the back. The layout is basically like all of his other artbooks. If you loved the movie then you'll love this book!

Slaying the Tiger: A Year Inside the Ropes on the New PGA Tour, by Shane Ryan

For more than a decade, golf was dominated by one galvanizing figure: Eldrick "Tiger" Woods. But as his star has fallen, a new, ambitious generation has stepped up to claim the crown. Once the domain of veterans, golf saw a youth revolution in 2014. In Slaying the Tiger, Shane Ryan introduces us to the volatile, colorful crop of heirs apparent who are storming the barricades of this traditionally old-fashioned sport. As the golf writer for Bill Simmons's Grantland, Shane Ryan is the perfect herald for the sport's new age. In Slaying the Tiger, he embeds himself for a season on the PGA Tour, where he finds the game far removed from the genteel rhythms of yesteryear. Instead, he discovers a group of mercurial talents driven to greatness by their fear of failure and their relentless perfectionism. From Augusta to Scotland, with an irreverent and energetic voice, Ryan documents every transcendent moment, every press tent tirade, and every controversy that made the 2014 Tour one of the most exciting and unpredictable in recent memory.

Antalya, Turkey

Victor’s Sunday

Victor Dubuisson opened his eyes on that November morning in Antalya, Turkey—more than a thousand miles southeast of his childhood home in France, but on the coast of the same Mediterranean Sea—hoping for a career-changing victory. He rose in obscurity, ignorant of the season that awaited him—how he’d be shoved onto the biggest stages, paired with giants, and asked not just to walk alongside them, but to win. Ignorant, too, of how the next twenty-four hours would foreshadow the coming year, when a talented generation that had grown sick of waiting drove the sport madly into its new era.

Only the most intense American golf junkies had ever heard his name, and even they couldn’t predict what his day would hold. The anonymous Frenchman, holding the first fifty-four-hole lead of his career—a significant five-shot advantage—was up against the likes of Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, and his idol: the man who had supposedly inspired his love of golf in 1997 with one of the most historic wins in the history of the sport; the man who became golf’s foremost icon, and the high tide on which golf had soared for more than a decade; the one who cast a shadow over the game, even when he was hobbled, even when he was absent; the man who would be chasing the young Frenchman on the final day—Tiger Woods.

•••

I didn’t know Victor yet, and I couldn’t guess how his story would come to fascinate me in 2014. To call the quiet Frenchman inscrutable would be underselling the point—the man was a sphinx, and arranging the puzzle pieces of his life would prove to be a huge challenge. Information of any kind was hard to come by, and on the rare occasions when an interesting nugget slipped through the cracks, you couldn’t trust it. Every quote, and every biographical detail, only deepened the mystery.

A French journalist, for instance, warned me that he liked to exaggerate, and I should have heeded those words when I sat down to hear Dubuisson speak later that season. At Donald Trump’s Doral, Florida, resort, the twenty-three-year-old—with his shoulder-length hair, scruffy goatee, and sleepy eyes—told a room full of reporters that he had more or less finished school by age ten, and spent all his time at the golf course. When a puzzled journalist asked about his parents, he said they weren’t around, and then refused to elaborate.

The story shocked us, and if I had paused to really consider the information, it might have triggered my bullshit detector. After all, he came from France—still, at last check, a participating member of the modern world, and not a place where a ten-year-old vagabond can quit school, live alone, and devote himself to the lonely pursuit of golf. But my skepticism failed me, and I jotted the words in my notebook, happy for a precious sliver of biographical detail.

At that point, I still believed that any golfer not named Tiger Woods was a boring country club kid with no personality. I wasn’t alone. This is a persistent image, and it’s even cultivated by the people in charge. Golf doesn’t need to be cool. The game’s keepers want the faintest hint of the reckless and rash to attract new fans, but not so much that it costs them the old ones. Caution is paramount.

Considering this, you can’t blame me for assuming that the players themselves followed the same formula: offbeat in superficial ways, maybe, but safe and boring in all the ones that matter.

I was wrong. The truth is that professional golf, which exacts a greater psychological toll than any other sport, attracts a motley crew of neurotics. The human landscape of the PGA Tour is strewn with egomaniacs, obsessive-compulsives, manic-depressives, ADHD cases, narcissists, and zealots.

The question is, how did they get this way? Were the players always screwy, and did their afflictions prepare them perfectly for a sport that rewards a certain amount of mental imbalance? Or were they promising youths with bright futures who had their brains twisted into strange shapes by the prolonged tortures of an unrelenting game?

Whatever the case, I believed Dubuisson’s latchkey tale, and so did everyone else. It was odd, yes, but nobody questioned its essential truth. Honesty is at the core of golf’s image, and who could believe this blushing Frenchman was anything other than scrupulously honest? Anyone who saw him perform in front of a microphone—painfully shy, mumbling every answer, eyes fixed on the floor—would know he was incapable of fabricating even the faintest show of enthusiasm, much less an entire childhood. Clearly, young Victor was not trying to mythologize himself; he just wanted to get the hell off the stage. Why would he say something so provocative about his youth, and then refuse to elaborate, unless it was the truth?

What I didn’t know—what would take a year to discover—was that when it came to Victor Dubuisson, simple explanations failed. He had his honest moments, but he could also distort and dissemble with the best of them, and the glare of the spotlight made him react in strange ways. He loved and hated this new attention all at once, and the more famous he grew, the more the balance tilted toward hate. I saw the early stages of this when I asked him what he liked to do for fun.

“Like any young men do, I go to cinema,” he said. The barest hint of a smile, secretive and tight, had crept onto his face. “I don’t know.”

“What’s your favorite movie?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” he repeated, and the smile tightened.

I smiled back, wondering if we had just shared some inside joke. I couldn’t quite understand. It would be months before I learned that when Victor smiled, there was nothing friendly about it. It was a sign of fear—of a bashful kid who senses someone probing into a private life he desperately doesn’t want to share. What seemed to me like an innocuous question, an icebreaker about movies, was to him a declaration of war. His smile was half defiance—“how dare you ask me a personal question!”—and half plea—“why won’t you leave me alone?” It was the smile of someone who had been cornered.

I didn’t put it all together until another French journalist, who had been tolerated by Dubuisson after good rounds and scorned after bad ones, laid it out for me.

“You saw Victor smiling at you?” he asked. I nodded. “It means he doesn’t like you.”

A truer picture of Dubuisson would take months to emerge, but in the meantime, we printed what we thought we knew: Eccentric Young French Golf Hermit Quit School at Age Ten, Lived Alone, Hates Media, Especially French, May Be a Deranged Paranoiac. In the golf world, that passed for a salacious story.

Even if he wasn’t a household name, Dubuisson’s résumé pegged him as a future star in Europe. Since turning pro in 2010 after reaching the number 1 amateur ranking in the world, he had managed twelve top-ten finishes on the European Tour. In the midst of this rapid ascent, he set the course record at St. Andrews, the most famous track in the world, with a 62, and by November 2013 he had earned more than one million Euros in a season. His résumé grew, and all he lacked was a win.

As he approached the putting green before his final round in Turkey on that fall morning in 2013—Dubuisson walks with a slow, duck-footed shuffle—he saw his idols spread out before him: Tiger, Rose, Stenson, Poulter. He already knew this was the biggest day of his career, but their presence hammered the point home.

The nerves hit hard on the first tee, but beneath it all were the seeds of confidence. His game had been sharp all week, and his lead was huge. With a good round—hell, even a decent round—nobody could catch him. As he prepared for his opening drive, he hoped simply that the first few holes would pass with no mistakes.

•••

Nine holes later, he had yet to make a birdie. That was the bad news. The worse news was that his playing partner, Poulter, had made three of them to reach -19, and Justin Rose had made four, plus an eagle, to climb up to the same score. Tiger Woods had made three of his own, but a bogey kept him at -17, while Jamie Donaldson lurked at -16.

The good news was that Dubuisson had not made a bogey either, and his overnight lead had kept him two shots clear of the field at -21. Not the ideal start he’d envisioned, but he was heading into the back nine with a lead.

A driver at the tenth, a short par 4, ended up in a bunker near the green, and though his angle wasn’t great, he nearly holed his wedge. A short putt gave him his first birdie of the day, and a bit of relief. But the field kept coming. Poulter birdied 11 to cut the lead to two, and when he bogeyed 12 to give it back, Rose was ready with a birdie of his own on 13 to reach -20. Jamie Donaldson, meanwhile, had taken flight on the back nine, with four birdies propelling him to -19, three behind the leader.

The dreaded moment finally came to pass on the par-3 14th. After missing the green with his tee shot, Dubuisson discovered his ball in an awful lie, from which he had no recourse but to hack out to fifteen feet. As he was preparing to putt, a roar came from somewhere ahead. Victor didn’t know it, but Jamie Donaldson’s tee shot on the 16th had just gone in the hole. The ace sent the Welshman to -21. When Dubuisson’s par putt sailed past the hole a moment later, forcing him to settle for bogey, he had officially blown his cushion.

Before he could catch his breath, Justin Rose birdied the 16th, and the three golfers now stood knotted at -21. Four holes remained.

Losing the big lead had a paradoxical effect on Dubuisson—it calmed him down. The burden he’d carried all day was gone; now he could just play.

His second life began on the 15th hole, a 337-yard par 4. After watching Poulter hit a drive to the front of the green, he pulled his own driver and launched a long, straight bomb of his own. It showed tremendous nerve at a critical time, and with his next shot, a chip that stopped three feet from the cup, he displayed the pinpoint short game that would make him famous later that year. He knocked in his birdie putt, and followed that by stiffing an iron into the par-3 16th, leaving himself ten feet for another birdie. He two-putted for par, though, and after his drive on the 17th, Jamie Donaldson finished his round with yet another birdie, tying for the lead at -22 with a brilliant Sunday 63.

With two holes left, Tiger and Poulter had faded, and Justin Rose finished with a bogey. Donaldson was the last opponent standing, and Dubuisson needed just a single birdie for his first win—or, alternatively, just one bogey for a devastating loss. He hit his approach on 17 to about thirty-five feet, which seemed to take him out of birdie range—even the best putters in the game don’t sink more than 10 percent of their putts from outside twenty-five feet.

As the putt ran toward the hole, he could tell the speed was perfect. He felt like he’d pulled it a shade left, but as it ran closer and closer, it broke slowly back to the right. Dubuisson watched the putt track, and at the final moment, it curled one last inch, caught the outside lip of the cup, and dropped. He pumped his fist downward, frantically like he was punching an invisible tabletop.

“Seventeen was the big one,” he told me later, “as you can probably tell by my reaction! I laugh at that when I watch it again but it was a really massive moment.”

In truth, the reaction was far more muted than most players would allow themselves with even less at stake. For the shy Frenchman, though, it passed for jubilation.

He took this energy to the 18th hole, a shot ahead of Donaldson and needing only a par for his win.

He managed to keep his first two shots in play on his final hole, leaving himself a short pitch to the flag. Par was almost a guarantee at that point, but standing over his third shot, he felt more nervous than he ever had in his career. It was easy, yes, but easy just meant there was so much to lose.

He backed off the ball, took two short practice swings, settled his body, and took aim. The ball rose lightly over the edge of a greenside bunker, landed on the green, and trickled toward the pin. By the time it stopped, he had left himself a two-putt that even the most anxious professional golfer couldn’t screw up.

He wouldn’t need the second stroke—he holed the birdie to win by two. Dubuisson removed his black Titleist visor, shook hands with Poulter, wiped his brow, and then fled in terror as three friends raced onto the green to douse him with champagne.

Over the next year, Dubuisson would leave his indelible mark on the game, intriguing and baffling and impressing us along the way. For now, he simply conducted his television interviews with that enigmatic style—a raised eyebrow, a Gallic shrug—the look of a man who would be happy to conceal his mystery forever.

What none of us knew, as 2013 wound to a close, was that he was in the vanguard of a movement that would come to transform the sport. Soon there would be others like Victor, young and fearless, waging war on their idols. Many of them were under thirty, and those that weren’t, like Bubba Watson and Sergio Garcia, belonged in spirit to the electric, eccentric successive generation. To a man, they embodied the passion that Tiger Woods had introduced to golf almost twenty years before.

Which was no accident—Tiger was their example, and the man they looked up to as children. He was bigger, badder, and meaner than his opponents, and he inspired a class of players who molded themselves in his image.

When I spoke with Jim Furyk at the Masters, he told me that he actually tried to hide the fact that he played golf in his high school days.

“It was a nerdy, goofy sport to play, and a lot of the kids that weren’t athletic played golf,” he said. “I was embarrassed by it.”

What Tiger did, on an international scale, was to make golf exciting for a new generation. He brought power and style to the sport, and he dazzled the kids who watched him in his prime. Those kids grew up, and they followed his lead. The moment Tiger won his first green jacket, he had anointed his successors—the same children who would one day compete on the same battleground, but with the crucial advantage of youth.

In early 2014, Tiger’s aging body got the better of him, and peers like Phil Mickelson were too battered to pick up the slack. In the vacuum, the balance of power shifted to the young. It spawned a year of evolution, and the season’s defining moments of brilliance and infamy belonged to players like Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Martin Kaymer, Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day.

Golf’s most exciting season since Tiger’s prime was imminent, and it was presaged on that November Sunday with a victory by an elusive Frenchman on the Mediterranean coast.

Entertaining background info - must read for golf fans
By Markus Egger
This book is very entertaining and provides many tidbits of background information that would normally not be available to fans. I find that this is exactly the kind of fresh book golf needs. It breaks out of the super-clean and tightly controlled journalism that normally goes with golf. The author says what he thinks and doesn't care who doesn't want to hear it. I would not be surprised if he isn't invited back to some places now that this book is out, but he seems to accept that willingly. He also makes it clear that some of the things are not just journalistic reporting, but he adds his own opinion. I find that to be a positive and it makes the book more interesting. I didn't agree with everything (although I did agree with a lot of it), but I always found it interesting.

I have heard some pretty harsh criticism about this book. On the Golf Channel, a reporter found herself "disgusted" by the author digging up background information. "Why does he bring in Patrick Reed's parents?" she asks, and points out she finds it inappropriate. I beg to differ! I can watch a tournament if all I care about is the score the player is able to play. If I want to know more about a player, then I read this book, and then I want to hear the background story. I never liked Patrick Reed much, and I now understand more about him. I actually like him a little better and feel more pity than dislike. And this is the kind of info I want from a book like this. Who knew that Dustin Johnson stole bullets for a gun that then ended up killing someone that very same day? I sure didn't. And I find that interesting back-story. As long as it is only a (small) part of the book (which it is). So I find all that to be a positive that makes the book more interesting, and I don't think the author overstepped the line. So Patrick Reed's parents tweet about hating his wife? OK. Maybe this kind of dirty laundry isn't everyone's cup of tee, but if they put it on Twitter then it is public and I don't see a problem with it being used to explain someone's character in a book.

I also read the other reviews here. I don't really follow the criticism of my fellow reviewers who gave low reviews. For instance, I did NOT feel that the author had trouble with golf lingo. He obviously isn't someone who has won a Major before, but I feel he does fine in terms of writing about golf and getting the vibe of the game right.

I also have NO problem with the book referencing Tiger Woods. His decline is a big story, and the rise of the younger players is a big story. Perhaps the raise of the younger players is the bigger story of the two. But I also see that putting "Tiger" on the cover helps to sell the book. Plus, the things the author writes about Tiger Woods are all very interesting. I am fine with all that.

Must-read account of a changing of the guard on the PGA Tour, and the players who are involved
By Gary K. McCormick
Shane Ryan's "Slaying The Tiger" takes the reader inside the ropes, and behind the scenes, of the PGA Tour during the 2013-2014 season - a year that may well be remembered as the beginning of the end of the Tiger Woods era.

Much as John Feinstein's book, "A Good Walk Spoiled" did 20 years ago, in the season before Tiger Woods made his professional debut, "Slaying The Tiger" goes beyond the television coverage, uncovering the up-and-coming crop of young guns who are stepping up to take command of PGA Tour golf as the once-dominant Tiger Woods falls further and further down the rankings and becomes less and less relevant to the game.

Contrary to the impression of pro golfers as cookie-cutter, corporate clones who just want to look good in their scripted apparel and collect big checks for their product endorsements and tournament finishes, Ryan's book shows that many of them are complex, even quirky characters who have gotten into, and stick with, professional golf for a wide variety of reasons.

Whether beloved by fans, like Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and (sometimes) Bubba Watson; often reviled, like the polarizing Patrick Reed - or complete mysteries, like the enigmatic young Frenchman Victor Dubuisson, these players are shown to be quirky, sometimes even a little neurotic - and definitely driven by the desire to succeed at the highest level in a game that is played by millions but perfected by none.

Ryan was a fairly experienced sportswriter when he started in on the task of researching this book, but new to the gypsy life of an embedded PGA Tour beat writer. He learned fast, though, and with some luck and some well-learned lessons from more experienced writers on the PGA Tour beat, he got backstories on the new generation of players that you won't read - at least in the same level of detail - in any other print medium, let alone hear on TV.

I think that "Slaying The Tiger" will come to be viewed as a landmark book in the chronicling of the history of the PGA Tour, as it captures an important period in the game's history - the ascent of a new crop of younger players as Tiger Woods, the man who has dominated the game for nearly two decades, in a manner second only to Jack Nicklaus (and arguably, even surpassing The Golden Bear in many respects) - fades into the background.

An enjoyable read, despite some seemingly personal attacks.
By Mike S.
There was much about this book that I liked. Shane Ryan clearly did his research, and the result is an entertaining look back to the exciting 2014 PGA Tour golf season.

There were some things that rubbed me the wrong way. Bubba Watson is a controversial figure on the Tour, seemingly loved as much as he's hated. Ryan writes about having poor interactions with Watson, but took criticism to an unfair level. Don't get me wrong - I love a good Bubba-bashing session as much as anybody, but it felt like Ryan was trying too hard to fit in with the, "cool kids" with his almost personal bashing of Watson.

The other thing was the Victor Dubuisson chapter. Dubuisson had a good year, but he is not as big of a star that warranted the amount of ink he received in this book. I didn't understand why Ryan felt the need to go as far as he did in tearing down Dubuisson's back story. It wasn't that important, in my opinion.

Overall, a fun look back at the last golf season, and a good look forward to the future.

Review

From the reviews of the first edition:

"Professor Back has written a superb book on advanced derivatives. The book provides wonderfully clear explanations without sacrificing mathematical accuracy. I highly recommend this book for everyone who wants to understand more about this fascinating and important area."
(Mark Broadie, Columbia University, New York)
"Professor Kerry Back's book fills a void in the derivative literature by providing an excellent and much needed book for a second course in derivatives. The clear presentation and the choice of VBA as the software tool makes this a perfect textbook for such a course. Using VBA via excel is an excellent choice as it exhibits an "open source" environment that is readily available for users."
(Eliezer Z. Prisman, York University, Toronto)

"This book deals with pricing and hedging financial derivatives. … Computational methods are introduced and the text contains the Excel VBA routines corresponding to the formulas and procedures described in the book. This is valuable since computer simulation can help readers understand the theory. … The book under review succeeds in presenting intuitively advanced derivative modelling … . In my opinion, it provides a useful bridge between introductory books and the more advanced literature." (Benjamin Jourdain, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2006 h)

"This book contains a practical introduction to the mathematics of financial engineering. It can serve as an excellent bridge between the introductory books on derivative securities and those that provide advanced mathematical treatments. … the book presents a very wide spectrum of the problems and methods concerned with pricing and hedging derivatives in a quite accessible way. … it can be strongly recommended not only to be used as a course but also for those wishing to train themselves in this field." (Malgorzata Doman, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1085, 2006)

"The strength of this book is in its clarity in exposition of the complex … modern financial mathematics. The book is self-contained, and a student can learn the key elements of the main toolkits in financial engineering … . Further, the book provides useful exercises and VBA programs so that the students can simulate the results … . I recommend the book to an MBA program … . The book could also be used in some master programs in financial engineering and mathematical finance." (Thomas S. Y. Ho, SIAM Review, Vol. 48 (3), 2006)

From the Back Cover

This book aims at a middle ground between the introductory books on derivative securities and those that provide advanced mathematical treatments. It is written for mathematically capable students who have not necessarily had prior exposure to probability theory, stochastic calculus, or computer programming. It provides derivations of pricing and hedging formulas (using the probabilistic change of numeraire technique) for standard options, exchange options, options on forwards and futures, quanto options, exotic options, caps, floors and swaptions, as well as VBA code implementing the formulas. It also contains an introduction to Monte Carlo, binomial models, and finite-difference methods.

excellent book
By quant
very practical for financial engineering. you definitely need to have read a beginning book on derivatives before tackling this book. i love this book because it focuses on implementation a lot and also gives a lot of intuition. overall, an excellent book

It has a number of virtues.
By Palle E T Jorgensen
I have been teaching from the book, and found a number of virtues. I used it in a beginning graduate course, but one which was very interdisciplinary. I aimed at covering all the relevant topics for the subject, not stressing one (too much!) over the others.
Now the book is aimed at MBA students, and I used it in a course with students from a handful of departments.

But for this purpose the level and the details in Kerry Back's book was on target.
It helps student who come with a minimal mathematical background to be able quickly to absorb some main principles.

And at the same time it helps math students to understand ideas from economics and from finance.
The book offers an effective entry into the fundamentals of probability space, random variables, and Black-Scholes.

In particular, it offers insight into Black-Scholes, that doesn't presuppose, on the part of readers, a lot of PDE theory.
Kerry Back's choice of VBA/Excel offers way students can easily start to play with examples, and to generate their own examples.

For my use in a math course, I picked a number of books to use as supplementary reading, for example Oksendal et al, Krylov, Shreve, Wilmott et al, and Baz et al.

Excellent for perhaps a third derivatives book.
By Drake Mandrake
First the conclusion: This, along with the standard Hull text, is one of my two favorite derivatives books. I wouldn't recommend this as a first or perhaps even a second derivatives book, but the clear writing, accessibility and interesting perspective based on change of numeraire arguments make it worth picking up. For me the nice thing about this book is that it has encouraged me to think differently about derivatives models. To give you a sense for how the book progresses, at the end of the first chapter the author gives a sketch with a little intuition on how the Black-Scholes Euro call formula can be derived based on the appropriate selection of numeraires. The author builds on the idea throughout the book. Most intermediate level derivative texts have change of numeraire much later in the book or as a lead in to fixed income models, while this book introduces it in the first chapter. Other reviewers have suggested that that the VBA/Excel is an excellent part of this book and I suspect this is true, but there are a number of other books that do a good job with VBA and Excel.

The Principle of Relevance, by Stefania Lucchetti

We revel in the Information Age. We love that all of our information can be mobile, global, available 24-7, and ready in various user-friendly formats. But we abhor the burden it has become, as many feel enslaved to their gadgets, obligated to respond to every email, friend request or Twitter feed. How is one to take advantage of technological advances without feeling consumed by them?
Today’s competitive edge is no longer based on availability of information but rather on the ability to navigate through an overwhelming amount of data and select, access, and use the information that is most relevant.
The Principle of Relevance explores, both with a philosophical flare and a practical approach, how to transform a continuous information flow from distraction into a tool of empowerment.

Review
If you often find yourself in information overload, this Principle, when mastered can change your life. As a logical, linear thinker, I had to laugh at how the author pegged my actions and the urgency of my distractions. Stefania provides tools to assist all of us in breaking the habits that keep us from being truly effective. --Judy Irving, Executive Coach, Moving On, USA

It's hard to define Stefania's work: it is not simply a book, certainly not a manual, for sure not a guide. This book is most of all an experience for those who recognize how hard is the job of living in a world where information does not match with knowledge and knowledge does not match with comprehension. Her way - the principle of relevance - is the key to convert information from a chaotic and shapeless mass into an instrument to empower ourselves, our capabilities and our ambitions, whatever they are, professional or private. However, Stefania went on and, starting from her own experience, poses a fundamental question to us: in the age of information, where everything is immediately accessible, what are we looking for, really? In a very easy way, she drives us back to our purposes and the true meaning of our searches, pushing ahead a fundamental concept: whatever the focus of our search is on and whatever its purpose is, we must always start from ourselves and not from external data. --Maria Cristina Ferradini, Director, Legal Department, Vodafone Italy

The book lives up to its name. To discover that it also excelled at offering practical, best practice advice was an absolute blessing. Navigating the streams of information that now cascade towards us is not realistic. With the aid of the ideas and solutions laid out in easy to follow steps, the readers will hone their new media; instincts. A fascinating and educational book. --Nick West, Head of Conferences and Events, Financial Times, Asia Pacific

Most of us are flooded with emails, text messages and phone calls at work everyday. Trying to respond to each and every one of them - perhaps out of the anxiety that we may miss something if we don't - often interrupts our train of thought and flow of concentration and that may render us less effective at work. Adapting to the times requires managing ever-expanding amounts of data. We need to learn how to filter out unnecessary information and select and use what is relevant, says Hong Kong-based solicitor Stefania Lucchetti in her book, The Principle of Relevance: The Essential Strategy to Navigate Through the Information Age. Through learning what she calls "the principle of relevance", we can train ourselves to expand our brain's capability to acquire and process multilayered information, and respond only to what is relevant. The first steps to mastering the principle are: developing a clear purpose, establishing criteria to determine when and whether it is attained, and gathering the resources necessary to reach the goal. Then, collect data that relates to the purpose from various points of view, and analyse and comprehend them. The final step is making a decision on if, how and when to respond to the information. Take replying emails as an example. "Whenever you feel like responding immediately to an email, go back to the purpose you have set," Lucchetti writes. "[Is] the content of this email relevant to effectively reaching your ultimate goal? Does it add content that is of real value, or do you feel the need to answer it merely to show your intent to communicate? What are you taking attention away from if you decide to answer the email?" You may then develop a reasonable time interval for checking email. But, ultimately, you have to be the "master of your own mind" to achieve your goal. "Breaking habits requires significant effort, but it can be done. It requires discipline, vision and self-mastery," Lucchetti says. Printed in a larger font size, and with extra spacing between lines and including chapter summaries, the book is designed to make reading easier and thereby help the process of information gathering by readers. The author also provides tools to help readers achieve the principle of relevance, from outcome checklists (on how to set a well-defined goal) and charts (to locate which piece of information is relevant), to pertinent questions and mind maps (in order to make sense of overwhelming information inflows). But the book is not intended to be a guide that offers a quick and easy way out. In fact, it takes time to learn how to use the tools and, as Lucchetti stresses, practice makes perfect. "[If] you... train yourself to use [the tools] habitually and instinctively, you will start processing information more quickly: this will enhance your ability to spot alternatives, expand your options, work with context and find a quicker and better way to reach your intended goal," she writes. --The South China Morning Post, 8 May 2010

A book to help navigate the flood of available information

In "The Principle of Relevance: The Essential Strategy to Navigate Through the Information Age," Stefania Lucchetti tackles the problem of information overload by addressing the questions, "What is worth knowing?" "What is worth doing?" and "What is worth responding to?" It's a quick book to read with large font size and extra spacing between lines, but the answer Lucchetti provides to determine relevance is not as quick. It will take some practice to use Lucchetti's strategy to breeze through information for those items of relevance. And this is something the author acknowledges as she encourages you to use your time on those things determined by you to be relevant.

The author has practiced law for over ten years, and I could sort of see that in the writing. It was a bit more formal than some self-help texts, and was outlined in a very logical and systematical manner. Maybe I saw it because I've been a lawyer almost ten years now. Regardless, I think it helped solidify the message, and it makes it easy to go back and reference parts you want to review.

Again, the book is a quick read, but you'll want to take a little time thinking about what Lucchetti wrote, and how best to incorporate her strategies into your own workflow. After a preface and introduction that provide a short road map of the book, the first part covers the principle of relevance and sums up why relevance is important. The opening quote by Stephen Covey sums it up well, "Anything less than a conscious commitment to the important is an unconscious commitment to the unimportant." The author then briefly goes over five elements of her principle of relevance. These include: 1. clarity of purpose. 2. situational awareness. 3. pattern discernment. 4. attention. 5. self-knowledge and self-mastery.

Part two of the book then goes into some tools to train your brain to recognize relevance. One of the tools is a modified four-quadrant diagram from Covey's time management teachings. In this diagram, the four quadrants are: Significant but not on purpose, Relevant, Not relevant, and On purpose but not significant. Finally, part three covers some applications of the Principle of Relevance.

These tools are more aimed at the knowledge worker who must determine relevance from all of the information available at our fingertips. I don't see people using these tools for the bulk of e-mails and such flooding the in-box. With that said, I don't know how much I'll actually use the tools as laid out in the book, but by reading over them, thinking about what Lucchetti wrote, and how I can apply the strategies to my own situations, I believe I've picked up some wisdom and reinforced other ideas I'd known to better tackle the information I need for my purposes. I especially liked the short chapter on attention. It made me stop and think beyond what was written, and that is something a good book will do, make you think!

And that is what I believe is the key to this book. Many people who read this book won't connect with the examples provided, and that's okay. I believe the reader should read and absorb what is useful to them, and think about how to apply the concepts presented in this text in their own jobs and lives. If a person does that, I'm sure they will determine that this book was "Relevant."

As a knowledge worker you should want to work fast, smart, & produce value while not having to think too much about how u do it!
By Jeff Lippincott
I liked this book. It had some problems, but I liked the subject matter. And I am not aware of another book that has tried to tackle the subject matter. This book takes a stab at providing a framework for improving the competencies and performances of knowledge workers. You know, the people who do research of all kinds (including on the Internet) and consolidate and condense their findings into white papers, reports, booklets, books, business plans, marketing plans, or whatever else requires research, critical thinking, and time management to create.

Knowledge workers can be amateurs, professionals, or best of all superstars at what they do. They can be incompetent (a novice), competent (merely skilled), or fluent and operating on auto-pilot while making a difference in the world and producing things of value. Some can go to a public library with the intent to research and write a term paper and spend two weeks just trying to find the correct books that are RELEVANT regarding the paper's topic. While other people can go into the library and find all the relevant books, articles, and other sources within 30 minutes and write the paper in the next 30 minutes. We are told in the instant book being reviewed that finding sources on the shelves of a library is one thing (and not all that difficult), but compared to researching online (using the Internet) where the availability of resources to the knowledge worker is unbelievable.

It's one thing to want to be a good knowledge worker who has some grasp of time management skills, research skills, and writing skills. Such a person can be a competent professional. But the author seemed to have written this book to let the reader know how to become fluent and operate on auto-pilot as a knowledge worker so they can tackle that research paper project in just an hour. Read this book and you might see the light on how to take the leap from mere professional to that of a superstar.

Of course, if this book really could deliver it would be priceless. And I don't think the book is priceless. For one thing, it probably should have included a self-assessment test the reader could use to see where he stood with regard to being a knowledge worker. Is he an amateur, professional, or superstar? Then the "curriculum" included in the book would be easier to use. I also had problems with the organization of the book, the length of the book, and the length (or lack of length) of the chapters within the book. Don't expect to pick up this book and have a firm grasp of its message when you finish reading it. It's not a spoon-feeder. But I think it covers all it needs to if you dig to get the appropriate message and pointers to practice regarding what it takes to become a fluent and highly skilled knowledge worker. 4 stars!

Powerful. Get It So You "Get It"
By Bill Jensen, author of Simplicity, Disrupt!, Future Strong
Stefania Lucchetti has created a must-read for everyone who works.

There is simply too much stuff coming at you. As Stefania sez, it's not enough just to keep up and get through it all -- you need to reeducate yourself to be able to find what's valuable and useful, and ignore all the clutter and crap.

Her three core skills: 1.) Identify what the options are in all that's coming at you 2.) See patterns among the chaos 3. focus your attention and self-knowledge as power ...are critical in today's overloaded work environments.

Get this book so you can "get it" and get on with living and working smarter, not harder.
