About the Author
Alfred Neufeld is a Mennonite theologian from Paraguay. An ordained minister, he has spent most of his professional life teaching and building up educational institutions. Neufeld is currently rector (president) of the Universidad Evangélica del Paraguay, a Protestant university owned by the Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ, Mennonite, and Mennonite Brethren churches of Paraguay. He is also a visiting professor at the Basel-Bienenberg Mennonite Seminary in Switzerland. He lives in Asunción, Paraguay.

A good study...with a disclaimer needed.

A very helpful collection that reports on beliefs held by Anabaptists. It is interesting because what holds the Anabaptists together is not a collection of beliefs, but a commitment to follow Jesus. This book discusses
the commonly shared beliefs that are held by most Anabaptists, thus it is very helpful. But the reader should
remember that Anabaptists are not held together by a rigid doctrinal belief system that all members are
expected to accept. There are many Anabaptists with more Fundamentalist leanings who wish this would be
true, and they do have a following, but that is a semi-distortion of the central element of Anabaptist faith
which is "are you following Jesus". But the book is a good presentation of what most Anabaptists accept.

For the last 30 years, he has run his own company, performing studies for the US Government and defense contractors. He has also presented dozens of courses in the US and Europe on Electronic Warfare and related subjects He has published over 200 professional articles on Electronic Warfare, receiver system design, and closely related subjects, including the popular EW101 column in the Journal of Electronic Defense. He holds an MSEE (Communication theory) and has 14 books in print, including EW 101, EW 102, and EW 103.

Of course you will need the EW 101, 102 &103 EW books if you want to fully understand this latest volume by a master writer of engineering electronic warfare lecturer David L. Adamy who is one of the leaders of the 14,000 members of the Society of Old Crows.

Fascinating memoir, refreshing philosophy, bracing spirituality

In Japan, there's no job lower than washing corpses and putting them in coffins. This was, as Shinmon Aoki wryly tells us, not his dream job. He had dropped out of college, opened a coffee shop and pub, and soon found himself running a hangout for poets and artists. A well-known novelist encouraged him to write; he got his first story published in a classy magazine. Soon he was neglecting his business --- he filed for bankruptcy as his wife was giving birth. There wasn't even money for baby food. So when he saw a want ad --- "for ceremonies to start a new life" --- he jumped at the job. Only when he started work did he see the stack of coffins.

The book begins on Aoki's first day. "There's more to washing corpses than meets the eye," he learns. "It's not just bathing them. You've got to wipe them down with alcohol, put them in their white 'Buddha-robes,' fix their hair and faces." And then there's the small matter of revulsion --- dead bodies force us to confront our own fear of death. "I worked frantically, frenzied, fighting off waves of nausea," he confesses.

Why am I shoving such unpleasantness your way, as if it were a gift? Because this 142-page book is unlike anything I've ever read. As memoir, it's fascinating. As philosophy, it's refreshing. As spirituality, it's lovely and reassuring. You definitely get your money's worth from Shinmon Aoki.

He realizes that they've been doing this "from the past beyond all reckoning." He looks at the fishermen trolling the river. "The salmon, too, in this one moment of autumn, were traveling upstream, fully believing in the eternal cycle of life."

Then he is called to bathe and coffin the father of an old girl friend. He had never met the man. Indeed, he'd never resolved the relationship with the woman. But now he is locked in a profound moment with her, a moment "that transcended the trivial world of scorn or pity or sympathy." It's so much bigger: "She accepted my total existence just as I was." And from this moment, he began to feel good about himself and his work.

And that opens him up more. He decides to claim a better opinion of coffinmen by wearing doctor's clothes. He gets respect from families and priests. And now he is ready to change his view of death.

In Part II, the cases are just as unattractive. But Aoki has changed. "All I see are dead people," he explains. "And so the dead appear to me as serene, even beautiful." And so do the living. He sees a glow around people, the sparkle of the day, the glory of the world --- and the insignificance of death.

The final section of the book deals with the Buddha and with Buddhist thought. It's a bit technical, but not esoteric. And it feels right --- the coffinman's passage is from horror of death to a deep appreciation of dying. Because the book is short and fascinating, you get there with him, and very quickly. Whether you can hold that thought is another matter.

I'll be thinking about this short book for a long time.

Buddhist universalism as seen in the faces of the dead

"If we never shift our perspective from the standpoint of life, no matter how much we want to think on death, it will only be an extension of our thinking on life." (p. 63)

This book came highly recommended by one of my best friends, a Jodo Shinshu priest currently living in Iceland. This book has some really profound moments, examining death and life ("LifeDeath") in light of the teachings of Shinran and of Jodo Shinshu (Shin) Buddhism. What kept it from being a five-star book was that much of the book (specifically the first section and the latter half of the final section) was too disjointed and culturally-specific for my taste.

The moments of clarity, when they come, though, are quite insightful and inspiring. Author Aoki worked as a coffinman (a corpse washer or mortician, apparently a job held in low esteem by the Japanese) for many years, and his practical experience with death and the dead have informed his understanding of Buddhism in general, and Shin Buddhism in particular. In the second section, "What Dying Means," he explores the universalism of Shin Buddhism in practical terms. It is not some theological or Buddhological argument that has swayed Aoki to accept Shin's "gospel" of universal enlightenment; rather, it is his everyday experience of seeing radiant peace on the faces of the dead.

"During their lives I don't know what right or wrong they might have done, but it seems to have no bearing on them now. It doesn't matter whether their beliefs were thick or thin, whether they belonged to this denomination or that ,whether they were interested in religion or not. Nothing they have done goes to making the dead wear such gentle faces." (p. 60)

He further explores this insight:

"I would contend that it is more accurate to say there's no good person or evil person among those who die...Many [Shin commentaries] say the good person relies on self-power in an effort to achieve birth in the Pure Land, while the evil person does not operate in that way. Various explanations are brought forth, but the peaceful composure of the faces of the dead are completely oblivious to these weary arguments." (p.61)

For Aoki, Shinran, like the Buddha, approached the topics of enlightenment and "LifeDeath" from a practical, rather than a speculative, perspective. Shinran's evaluation of the Larger Sutra of Infinite Life (the foundational text of Shin Buddhism), as the core scripture of the Buddhadharma, came not from its intellectual or theological content, but from the fact that in the text, attention is drawn to Shakyamuni Buddha's radiant visage. For Shinran, as for Coffinman Aoki, this radiance calls to mind the radiant peace on the face of the dead, and is thus the only real support that the Shin Buddhist gospel of universal salvation and enlightenment in the Pure Land requires.

Something you don't read everyday...

... Also, should you find this title, no, it is not mis-categorized from the graphic novel/comic genre.
Shinmon Aoki's "Coffinman" (subtitled The Journal of a Buddhist mortician) is a small work that one can easily complete and mentally digest in a short period of time in-between the latest Oprah recommendation and politico-talking head bleating, but unlike the de jour bestsellers, "Coffinman" will resonate with the reader for a much longer time and for deeper practical purposes. As the story begins, Mr. Aoki reflects upon the sight of Mt. Tateyama, and one can sense that the mountain is symbolic of the big (but not unconquerable) question(s) that will ultimately present themselves. Several that come to mind after reading are, do we value the time we have? Are we really living or just merely existing? Do we respect life (no, not in that Operation Rescue definition of the word) or are we desperately clutching it close because of our fear of what happens "after" life? And when we revisit Mt. Tateyama later in this diary/memoir, it seems welcome and is almost reassuring in the sense that our assumptions and opinions regarding the Big 3 of life and death and suffering have been somewhat crystallized. Indeed, some answers can be just as huge as the questions.
This is a recollection of one's experience with the issue of death and it's cultural taboos, of familial pride and the potential for dysfunction, of self-doubt, and of acceptance and self-awakening. How Mr. Aoki acquires his insight is unorthodox to say the least; one doesn't get the impression that he accepted his position as "coffinman" in the context of "it's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it." Rather, the occupation seems to have been drifted into, the way a boat may drift from a familiar harbor into a larger sea without perceptual knowledge. He realizes that he's no longer where he started, but now has much more room for exploration. And in that sense, one gets a deeper understanding about the nature and the participation of "the end", and the acceptance of the role of finality in this flowing and twisting stream that is life. Death does, however, loom prominently and there are some descriptive scenes the deal with physical deterioration of the human body. They are, however, not written in a sensationalistic fashion. Actually, Mr. Aoki follows a respectable and humble style, comfortably balancing passages between prose and poetry.
I would not go so far to suggest that the book is definitive about the subject of Buddhism. The personal experiences involving death and dying could have happened to anyone and the religious epiphany (of sorts) involved, in this case, happened to manifest into a deeper appreciation and understanding of Buddhism. The potential for crossover to those readers of different faiths appears to be easy and non-threatening (and encouraged) in that spirituality can arise and enlighten from the most unlikely of wellsprings.

It's Not Got It

I read this book with no prior familiarity with the author. Although it seemed very promising and innovative at first, I won't be adding it to my list of recommended books for children.

I would put this book in the same category as "Oh The Places You'll Go" (Dr. Seuss) and "I Knew That You Could" (Dorfman and Ong). All three contain pithy advice about life, set to rhyme, and illustrated for children. Unfortunately, these books tend to appeal far more to adults than to children.

In my experience, rhyming read-alouds are best for children up to about kindergarten-age. Only more sophisticated illustration or writing will extend the use-life of the book into early or mid elementary. In the case of "It's Not What You've Got," the ideas presented in the book will be difficult to grasp for young children with little life experience. By the time they are old enough to understand and make use of the advice, the book will seem far too childish. Therefore, I can imagine adults really loving the idea of a book like this, and giving it as a gift, only to see it gather dust. The illustration style is so unremarkable that I doubt that many kids will be drawn to it. Further, the wordy title just screams "Educational Book!" and will repel most children browsing the shelves for a bedtime story or something to idly pass the time.

As for the book's advice, I find most of it to be sound, but I agree with a previous reviewer that Tip #4 (You Have the Power to Get What You Want) is somewhat at odds with the advice to be happy with what you have, especially with the picture of a girl aspiring to own a car, a pony, a bg house, an expensive handbag, and dreaming about travel and adventure. I believe strongly in the power of positive thinking, but wealth and riches are not the only things to envision in one's future. This double-page spread could have been much more thoughtfully designed.

I suggest that "It's Not What You've Got" be used by parents and teachers as a source for ideas on how to speak about money with children. The individual tips could be used for lesson planning, and many of the discussion questions at the end could be woven into conversation or discussion quite easily without seeming too preachy. Repetition of the ideas in different contexts is what will help them sink in. As long as the kids never lay eyes on the book itself, I see some promise.

Teaching Children To Be Positive at All Income Levels...

I had thought this was going to be a storybook but the book has a poetry type feel rather than that of a story taking place. The book is written in rhyme and addresses a new concept on each page. With each turn of the page, there is a new poem addressing a new value to teach your child. I found the illustrations very helpful for discussions with children, for example: the big house pictured by and apartment building on the page "It Doesn't Matter What They Have."

This book has the potential to be used across ages as young readers will most likely just enjoy the rhymes, but as children get older, parents can use the examples and concepts for discussions related to real life. There will always be someone with more... and always someone with less than what you have. Teaching children to be positive at all income levels will build their self-esteem, pride, and confidence through life.

I love all of Dr. Dyer's children's books. The ten lessons about money and abundance in this book are important for children and adults alike, and are poeticly stated clearly and simply in a way that easily invites wonderful discussions about the messages. And I really like the questions at the end to further the discussions. It's such a treat to listen to the thoughts of my children that these discussions invoke.
Adult friends that I've given this book to were very grateful for the new ideas on money and abundance they learned enabling them to positively change their thougts.
And I love the softly colored illustrations.

Very Informative and easy to follow!!!

I noticed that the 6th edition of the ServSafe books was out, but the price was just to steep for me. Being the smart shopper that I am I knew that this edition and the newer edition would be very similar. These books and other textbooks usually contain the same information. I purchased this book and read it all thoroughly in one day. Very informative. I was just refreshing my ServSafe knowledge. Easy to follow and understand. The only thing I don't like about Servsafe in general is that some of the questions with pictures are not always clear as to what's going on in the picture. Other than that for maybe one or two questions , i have no other problems.

I will re-review after getting through the book completely, but initial review of the book is I am very pleased. The Structure of this book section, and Part 1 "General Introduction" cover how the book is laid out, and the basics you could learn from the official certification page, (difference between an associate and professional cert). The Strategic Understanding and Exam strategies sections weren't break through techniques, but good information for someone who hasn't studied for an IT cert before, or has been out of school for a while. I'm only a chapter into the bulk of the book, but am very please thus far- the information is broken up by topic, written clearly, and has graphic diagrams.

If you're familiar with SAP, and their learning material and courses, this book follows the same format. With that said, I've taken SAP courses, and own a few BW books, so I don't agree with the negative reviews. But then again, the technical content isn't overwhelming.

If you're new to programing, and SAP/ABAP specifically, it will be a more difficult read, and should probably be saved for after you learn alot of the base concepts and terms.

The Undoing

When I first picked up The Unleashing, I was thrown a bit by the dynamic in the Crow house. All the women with their varying degrees of, lets face it, craziness took a bit for me to get used to. I was happy that I stuck the first book out, because once I understood the ebb and flow of the other women's personalities the humor of the situations really came to the forefront.

That same humor flows into the second book The Undoing. I think just by understanding the writing style and the characters, I ended up enjoying The Undoing even more than the first book. I found the antics between the Crows even more funny. I loved the somewhat naive seriousness of The Protectors. Their love of books was charming and the way they thought themselves smarter than other clans was hilarious.

Jace was a stand-out Crow for me in The Unleashing. Her penchant for hiding in seemingly random places was intriguing. I wondered what her deal was, in a good way I assure you. So I loved the The Undoing was her book. What I loved even more was that her quirkiness was not a result of her tragic past the lead to her becoming a Crow. That kind of closed off manner that she has is just the way she is, and I liked that the point of this book wasn't trying to "change" who Jace was. Yes, there are some characters who don't understand Jace and want to get her out of her shell, but the core group of people who matter to Jace and who care about Jace in turn would never think of changing her.

Ski was a great love interest for Jace because he sought to understand her so he could fit into her life rather than trying to make him fit into hers. There was attraction between the two of them from the beginning but because of Jace's past experience with her ex she's hesitant to start anything with anyone. I loved that there was really no pressure on either side for something to happen, things just developed naturally.

I'd say that it's probably wise to read the first book in the series before jumping into this one just because one of the main story arcs from the first book flows over to The Undoing. I think readers are well aware at the end of the first book that things are not yet taken care of, even if the characters aren't so aware yet. The same thing happens in this book. There are definite story threads that are dealt with yet no necessarily completely resolved but I will go so far as to say there's nothing cliffhanger-like about the ending by any means.

Overall, this has started to be a series that I really look forward to. There's just the right amount of humor coupled with some very interesting Norse mythology. I liked seeing Kera and Vig from the first book still get a good amount of page time, yet we see them from Jace and Ski's points of view and it's always interesting kind of turning the tables in how a character is perceived. This series is highly recommended. Plus, there's a not-to-be-missed party at the Crow house!

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between

What happens when you take trademark Laurenston humor and action, mixed with a ton of Norse mythology and a dash of romance? This series is what happens. Ms. Laurenston’s latest urban fantasy series is hard to describe but a hoot to read.

The premise: The second book in the series begins a few weeks after the first book ends. The Crows, a group of women who have been given a second chance at life by serving the nordic goddess Skuld, are just finding out that Gullveig, the big Bad introduced in the first book, isn’t as vanquished as they thought she was. There are nine Clans that were formed by various gods and goddesses to work towards preventing Ragnarok, aka the apocalypse, or at least an incredibly bad day. The Crows are one of the Clans, but they all play a part in this story, as well as cameos by several gods including (dumb as a hammer) Thor, Odin, Tyr and Freyja. This is the overarching storyline that drives it all, and while there’s plenty of exposition given to get the reader up to speed when necessary, I do recommend reading the first book.

Jace is my soul sister-Crow: Jacinda “Jace” Berisha, is the sister-Crow at the heart of this entry and we get a glimpse of her first Life as the wife of a crazy bastard cult leader. From the prologue on, I was solidly in Jace’s corner. It also didn’t hurt that Jace is an anti-social introvert who will take a good book and her dog Lev over (most) people. Frankly, she’s a girl after my own heart.

Ski’s hot and nerdy, just like I like ‘em: Danski “Ski” Eriksen, one of the Protectors, wears glasses, is just as into books as his bethren but a better at the social game than anyone else. He’s nerdy but self-aware, a great combination. He also needs Jace’s help in translating some old Russian books he and his Protector brothers found. Jace captivates him but she’s a bit oblivious and I liked that alot. Ski’s a great gamma type of hero - as essentially the protector of his Protector brothers, he’s perfectly equipped to deal with their introverted, absent-minded professor ways. This also makes him the perfect man to love Jace.

That dash of romance: I think that going into this read with the mindset of urban fantasy rather than a more traditional paranormal romance helped my enjoyment because my expectations were tempered. When I say a dash, while each book is anchored by a love story, it’s the big picture and the day-to-day lives and interactions between all these different warriors and gods that drives the narrative. The romance is like a tasty, sexy garnish rather than the meat of the tale.

This story is clearly unfolding over several books, and there’s alot of moving parts at work. It can make some scenes with alot of explanations of the Gods and their relationship a bit unwieldy. That said, I truly enjoyed getting to see more of the ‘verse, the different characters, as well as deepening the relationships established in the first book.

The Bottom Line
I always enjoy a chance to visit one of Ms. Laurenston’s diverse and hella-funny worlds, and The Undoing builds and expands on the first book so well, I can’t wait to see what’s next. The Crows are moving up my list of favorites and if you’re into urban fantasy/paranormal romances, I encourage you to give Ms. Laurenston’s (who also publishes under the name G.A. Aiken) books a shot.

Great fun, hard to put down.

I was not as fond of the Call of Crows series as I have been of other books by Shelly Laurenston, in part because all the references to Norse mythology were not familiar and the names are weird. (However a Great Courses course on the History of the Vikings has helped there.) In any case I have loved Ms Laurenston's books in the past. I am glad I did. The Undoing is great! Shelly Laurenston always delivers great characters and books which are thick with both plot and humor. Her Crows are not very different from the Roller Blade teams of her shifter stories and the humor and trash talk between the various factions of the gods' human minions are Laurenston at her best. I can hardly wait for the next book in this series and won't worry all that much about which god wants what when. Ultimately they are all sort of dicks but what are you going to do.

It's a very good book gives you an idea of what is expected in the test

DON'T DO IT- Will invalidate results

Bought this book for my daughter as she was curious and a little anxious about the test. We looked through it for about twenty minutes and then put it away, but then during the test administration she mentioned to the tester that she had practiced for it, and the tester noticed she seemed familiar with the instructions. You are not supposed to prepare for the test, so the tester was obligated to put the fact that my daughter had been prepped in her report to the private school to which we were applying, which invalidated her results. It was embarrassing, expensive (she had to take another comparable test later) and counterproductive (can't help but think it prejudices our application and she didn't do as well on the different test.)

There's a lot of criticism in the reviews about giving your child an unfair advantage, but I didn't see anything about invalidating the results. I should have done more research. So unless you're interested in warning your child he/she has to lie about practicing, I would avoid this. I wish I had.

My son used this book to prepare the gifted program screen test and got 98% high score. It really amazing.
