I tagged this book 5 stars out of 5 stars because this book is really enjoyable! For almost all ages! The things I loved about this book was when Christine's friends came to her dad's wedding at the end of the book! For me, that was very touching! There was nothing I disliked about this book! I would definitely recommend this book to all people 13 and older. I am definitely going to recommend to my friends and especially family!

Extremely likeable character and story

For the Miracle Girls' sophomore year, we hear their story through the voice of Christine, a unique member of the group who lost her mother in a car accident the year before and has struggled with a sense of loss that affects even her personal identity. This is evidenced through her unique look, her somewhat lonely place in high school, and weekly sessions with the school counselor. Christine tells us the Miracle Girls had a great summer of bonding, but from the first page we see they might struggle to stay together through the school year. Sure enough, Riley and Ana compete with each other over school, all the girls have their own issues with family, and each of them sometimes chooses a boy over the group.

Christine, however, needs the group more than anything. Her father is marrying a woman she sees only as The Bimbo. Her step-sister to-be has moved into her room. She can't bring herself to talk about her mother's death in the accident Christine miraculously survived, and she gives her already fragile heart to a boy who may be less than careful with it. If the Miracle Girls can't come together and be there for her when she needs them, Christine may be lost for good.

Christine has far more doubt than faith throughout the book, and I appreciated the way this was not neatly resolved through typical answers and cliches. However, the efforts by God to keep Christine are so evident and moving. He is evident through the memories of her mother and in the help of a few important people in Christine's life.

Christine's journey in this book is beautiful and poignant. The Miracle Girls represent a kind of friendship every person needs and so few of us actually have.

Another Fanastic Read from Anne and May

After reading Emily Ever After, Consider Lily and The Book of Jane by Anne Dayton and May Vanderbilt, I couldn't help but read the Miracle Girls series, and believe me, the books do not disappoint! Breaking Up Is Hard to Do was a definite page turner and I stayed up quite late finishing it.

Christine is very relatable just as Ana was in the first book. The hardness that she displays on the outside is just the beginning. I really liked how her story and her past were slowly revealed over time instead of a mass replay of history at the beginning. It was heartbreaking to find out the story of the loss of her mom and the struggle to have a relationship with her dad. The bond that Christine had with Candace's daughter, Emma, was very sweet and unique. It was great to see the relationship go from an annoyance for Christine to something that she clearly valued, a bond that in the end she seemed to even cling to. And of course there has to be some sort of a love story, but as much as you always want the heroine to end up with the hero, life is not always like that, so this story line made the book seem all the more real. The friendships between the Miracle Girls goes through both highs and lows just like normal friendships. But these girls know that their friendship is like an anchor in their lives and in the end they will do anything to be there for each other.

I love that we are getting to know each one of the Miracle Girls and that there is a focus on one specific girl in each book. I am looking forward to the next book with Zoe as the focus, she always seems to be the one that openly will do anything to keep the Miracle Girls intact, but her life is always a bit of a mystery. Keep the books coming Anne and May, you have one faithful reader that will always be anticipating the next great read from you.

Important concepts that most skips still need to learn as well

Loaded with essential fundamentals and interesting tips for sweepers. It's a must-read for every front-end curler that isn't already playing at highly competitive levels. Quite frankly, though, those of us who need this book the most are the 10U club-level curlers (yours truly) who moved to back-end play before mastering front-end play. This book has certainly changed how I'll play front end... but I think the lessons are even more important for moderately experienced skips who are genuinely interested in grooming newer curlers into capable sweepers that add value to every shot. If you play back end, pause after each paragraph of this book for a meditative stop-start-continue drill -- reflect carefully on how you communicate when calling line and then put yourself in your sweepers' shoes -- make an honest assessment of whether your communication habits are nurturing or thwarting their badassedness. You may be quite surprised!

I *love* this book. The author has done us a great service by really laying out the fundamentals of the 2nd least glamorous but (often) most improvable aspect of our game. Buy it, read it, re-read it... you won't be disappointed.

Great Advice for Beginners Who Are Working on Becoming Intermediates

There is some solid obvious and not-so obvious advice in here for front-end players, both beginners and intermediates alike.

Given how new the places I curl at are, I often find myself on a quest for Curling advice books that are geared towards beginners looking to "break through" to that next intermediate level. This is because having the wisdom and guidance of an experienced clubmate/fellow player to help get there runs few and far between, and us beginners often find ourselves fending for ourselves. This book answers the call of that quest wonderfully. It's a perfect-sized read with sage tactics and advice for newbies on the cusp of that next level.

Dean Gemmell breaks it down in a conversational writing style that is easy to follow and, for the most part, visualize. (The only time this gets tricky is in the chapter on 'Switching,' but that idea unto itself deserves a few re-reads.)

The fact that it's a relatively short read that I was able to put away in a few hours makes it perfect for use in the future as a handy reference tool, too.

Overall, highly recommended.

overall, an excellent gastroenterology book.........however,too much biochemistry, for me......the treatments went in to too much detail, like in the hepatitis section, which I found overwhelming for a primary care doc; seemed to be perfect, however, for a gastroenterologist.....highly recommend the book.....should be enjoyed by the primary care doc.......ken Humphrey, md, abem, abfp.......

About the Author

WAYNE WOLF is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Associated Faculty in the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University. His research interests include embedded computing, multimedia systems, VLSI and computer-aided design. He is the author of Computers as Components: Principles of Embedded Computer System Design and Modern VLSI Design, Third Edition. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and ACM, and an IEEE Computer Society Golden Core member. In 2003, he earned the ASEE/EED and HP Frederick E. Terman Award.

This book is an experiment. Shortly after completing the third edition of ModernVLSI Design, I came to realize that an increasing number of digital designs that usedto be built in custom silicon are now implemented in field programmable gate arrays(FPGAs). While traditional VLSI system design won't go away any time soon, anincreasing number of designers will work with FPGAs and many of them will neverdesign a custom chip.

However, designers of large FPGA-based systems really do need to understand thefundamentals of VLSI in order to make best use of their FPGAs. While it is true thatmany system designers simply treat the FPGA as a black box, that approach makesthe system designer miss many opportunities to optimize the design to fit within theFPGA. The architecture of FPGAs is largely determined by VLSI constraints: logicelement structures, programmable interconnect structures, interconnection networks,configuration, pinout, etc. Understanding how the characteristics of VLSI devicesinfluence the design of FPGA fabrics helps the designer better understand how to takeadvantage of the FPGA's best characteristics and to minimize the influence of itslimitations.

Consider, for example, the interconnection networks in FPGAs. Most modern FPGAarchitectures provide designers with several different types of wires: local, generalpurpose,and global. Why do all these different types of connections exist? Becausewires become harder to drive as they grow in length; the extra circuitry required todrive long wires makes them more expensive. Understanding how these differenttypes of interconnect work helps a designer decide whether a particular logicconnection requires one of the more expensive types of wires.

Today's FPGAs are truly amazing. High-end FPGAs can hold several million gates.Several FPGAs incorporate one or more CPUs on-chip to provide a completeembedded computing platform. Many of the techniques for designing such largesystems are the same whether they are built using FPGAs or custom silicon. This isparticularly true when we want to make best use of the silicon characteristics of VLSIstructures.

As a result of these advances in VLSI systems, I decided to use Modern VLSI Designas a starting point for a new book on FPGA-based system design. Readers of ModernVLSI Design will recognize material from most of the chapters in that book. I haveextracted material on VLSI characteristics, circuits, combinational and sequentiallogic design, and system architectures. However, I have also added quite a bit of newmaterial, some of which is specific to FPGAs and some of which is simply a new (andI hope better) look at digital system design.

One of my major goals in writing this book was to provide a useful text for bothdesigners interested in VLSI and those who simply want to use FPGAs to build bigsystems. Chapter 2 of this book is devoted to a review of VLSI: fabrication, circuits,interconnect characteristics, etc. Throughout the rest of the book, I have tried to breakout most details of VLSI design into separate sections that can be skipped by thereader who is not interested in VLSI. However, those who want to understand moreabout the design of FPGAs as VLSI devices can read this material at their leisure.Chapter 3 is devoted to a survey of FPGA fabrics--the basic programmable structuresof FPGAs. The commercial offerings of companies change all the time, so thischapter is not meant to be a replacement for a data book. Its goal is to introduce somebasic concepts in FPGAs and to compare different approaches to solving the basicproblems in programmable logic. What to do with these FPGA structures is thesubject of the rest of the book.

Chapters 4 and 5 go into detail about combinational and sequential logic design,respectively. They describe methods for the specification and optimization of digitallogic to meet the major goals in most design efforts: size, speed, and powerconsumption. We introduce both Verilog and VHDL in this book. While this book isnot intended as a definitive reference on either language, hardware descriptionlanguages are the medium of choice today for designing digital systems. A basicunderstanding of these languages, as well as of the fundamentals of hardwaredescription languages, is essential to success in digital system design. We also studythe tools for optimizing logic and sequential machine designs in order to understandhow to best make use of logic and physical synthesis.

Chapter 6 looks at the structure of large digital systems. This chapter introducesregister-transfer design as a methodology for structuring digital designs. It uses asimple DSP as a design example. This DSP is not intended as a state-of-the-art CPUdesign, but it does allow us to consider a large number of different design problems ina single example.

Chapter 7 caps off the book by studying large-scale systems built with FPGAs.Platform FPGAs that include CPUs and FPGA fabrics allow designers to mixhardware and software on a single chip to solve difficult design problems. Multi-FPGA systems can be used to implement very large designs; a single multi-FPGAsystem can be programmed to implement many different logic designs.So what will happen to ASIC design? I don't think it will go away--people will stillneed the high density and high performance that only custom silicon provides. But Ithink that FPGAs will become one of the major modes of implementation for digitalsystems.

Xilinx has graciously allowed us to include CDs that contain the Xililnx StudentEdition (XSE) tools. The examples in this book were prepared with these tools andyou can follow along with the examples using the tools. You can also use them tocreate your own examples. Beginner book

A entry level book, with too much time spent on VLSI issues, with a lot of large screenshoots & large pictures just to fill in the space.

The mentioned "A start-to-finish DSP case study addressing a wide range of design problems" which made me buy the book is a joke. It's hardly a advanceed DSP unit, more a Harward architecture CPU which implements 5 or 6 instructions and no advanced functionality and design issues which might arise in a complex design.

You can find much better synthethiable cores free on internet to learn from them. Save your money if you are anything but a beginer in FPGA.

I agree with the other negative reviews. This book is a complete waste of money. It only covers the basics--and not very well. The chapter on FPGA fabrics had me scratching my head. I was able to find much better (and much less expensive) resources online. Trust me, there's no topic this book covers that you can't find for free on the Internet. Don't waste your money. Just because someone's from Princeton doesn't mean they know how to write a book.

Not for beginners

I was really disappointed with this book. It does not explain enough FPGA programming to get started, and spends much time covering topics that are probably of interest to people who already know how to use an FPGA and want to use it better.However, as far as I can tell about this, it seems to be an excellent complement to an introduction to FPGAs design. The inner workings of the system are explained in depth and very clearly.

About the Author
Born in Budapest in 1910, Magda King was educated there, in Vienna, and at Edinburgh. She contributed papers to The Human Context, to the Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology and conducted seminars on Heidegger at the University of Edinburgh. John Llewelyn is the author of many books including most recently, The HypoCritical Imagination: Between Kant and Levinas.

A Beginner's Guide to S&Z

As the backcover promised, King's lectures/commentary are quite easy to understand and move at a brisque but manageable pace. She doesn't dwell on minute issues in the text, but chooses instead to survey (generally) all the major (and quite difficult) concepts which Heidegger introduces in S&Z. At times I wished that King discussed matters in more detail: no mention of sec. 42 and the myth of care, or much discussion of the "Cartesian" metaphysic which is so central to H's "Abbau"; but as a first time reader of S&Z, perhaps this was the best thing for me, that I solidify my understanding of key terms and ideas before delving into more contentious matters of interpretation. My experience was only slightly frustrated by the fact that I read the Maccquarrie translation and not the newer Stambaugh, which she uses.

An Essential Companion to Heidegger

Reading the original text of Being and Time is a daunting task. Magda King effectively breaks down the author's arguments and addresses them, one by one, in a rigorous but readable fashion.

This book is highly recommended for students of the text, as well as for people (like myself) who already consider themselves familiar with it. Whichever camp you fall into, you will end up learning something new.

Pretty lousy "beginner" book.

I'm only on page 54 and I can't remember ever reading a book that's more frustrating. The author many times has mistaken clicking for double-clicking (or vice versa). No big deal. I figured it out. But on more critical explanations, the author skips steps leaving the reader (at least in my case) very confused how to get from step 1 to step 2 (when in fact there's at least an additional step that's left out). I'll give it to chapter 2, and if the material doesn't improve, the book is going in the trash.

I use this for school and it definitely helps tremendously. You probably want to have a little knowledge of Inventor and a good bit of AutoCAD experience before diving into this though. The illustrations are helpful I just wish there was more as the steps can get confusing. It is a small book and pretty light for all the material it has in it.

Good Starting Point for Begginers

For a beginner, this is an ideal starting point. For an intermediate user of Inventor there are other books that go in greater detail in setting up the Inventor environment. I particularly like the simple approach that the author takes in bringing the reader to a point where he or she can start using the software with a significant amount of confidence without explaining every single detail of the menus and setup options.
The final output of a design is the drawing document, I think even an intermediate user can benefit from this chapter.
If you are just starting to use Inventor '14 or '15, this book is for you.

The book really is for practitioners...

Its good. Once you get over his British writing style, its a good read. I'm only 1/2 way through, but I have found it very accessible so far. Not only does he talk about the UML diagraming, he talks about the Unified Process (in like 250 pages! - now thats a refreshing break). The book delivers what it promises. Its not a reference guide, but it is definitly *teaching* me some practical stuff.

Shows how to use RUP in real life

Easily approachable and good. The book talks not just about RUP, but also about its roots (OMT, Fusion, objectory etc), and about UML. It also guides the reader through the maze of workflows in the RUP and gives advice on how to configure RUP as a lightweight process for web development. This book is a great contrast to all the other RUP books that are too theoretical to be of any use except for those who already are using RUP.

A practical and useful approach to O-O projects, UML and UP.

This is a rare find. It is a useful combination of many related software engineering topics, with enough O-O history to provide some perspective, and enough detail on the Unified Process & the Unified Modeling Language to provide both an understanding and a practical series of steps for project success.
If your department tries to balance doing things right with doing things quickly, if you're wondering why the UML has become the de facto notation, if you're using Java and want your group to do more object-oriented approaches, if you're thinking you'd like to use Java, or you'd like to use the UML for your design notations, if you've heard object-oriented engineering can provide some benefit.. then you'll probably find this book to move to the top of your 'must read and must share' list.
If you're moving your architecture towards distributed objects and Enterprise JavaBeans, there's some useful advice on designing Java-specific objects.
It is clearly written and easy to follow, and can be read chapter by chapter or as a reference text. I would have only one suggestion for the author. He briefly mentions the similarity between O-O and the Spiral Model or the UP and the Spiral Model. Mr. Hunt would have done well to include an overview of the Spiral Model in his work. [Search the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon for more info. Our design team considers the Spiral Model an important and practical and even useful approach to software engineering projects. Combine the Spiral Model methodology for projects, the Unified Process approach to designs, and the Unified Modeling Language for design notations, and you've got what we consider to be a winning approach to object-oriented software development.
Mr. Hunt provides a valuable book on the UP and the UML with a real world perspective. We're going to buy copies of his book for our entire team.
